Paid mods coming to Bethesda games

Recommended Posts

Are Creators Paid For Their Work?

Quote

Yes. Just like our own game developers, Creators are paid for their work and start receiving payment as soon as their proposal is accepted and through development milestones.

This is important. It means that these Creators get paid even without a finished product, all they need to do to start getting paid is having their pitch accepted. In other words, they are essentially hired freelancers, and Bethesda will be spending money (taking risk) before the product reaches the market.

Is Creation Club paid mods?

Quote

No.  Mods will remain a free and open system where anyone can create and share what they’d like. Also, we won’t allow any existing mods to be retrofitted into Creation Club, it must all be original content. Most of the Creation Club content is created internally, some with external partners who have worked on our games, and some by external Creators. All the content is approved, curated, and taken through the full internal dev cycle; including localization , polishing, and testing. This also guarantees that all content works together. We’ve looked at many ways to do “paid mods”, and the problems outweigh the benefits. We’ve encountered many of those issues before. But, there’s a constant demand from our fans to add more official high quality content to our games, and while we are able to create a lot of it, we think many in our community have the talent to work directly with us and create some amazing new things.

Don't see any problem. These are going to be high-quality DLC like and originally created by the dev team or devs in cooperation with successful modders.

Greedy are the people who think everything should be free.

No way I would pay for backpacks and Dwemer mudcrabs.

However, if bunch of those community creators got together, created a big mod (DLC size) with quests, new areas and those small mods shown in the video and charged a normal DLC price for it, then I'd be more than happy to pay for it.

If they really want the money, they could just introduce a pay what you want system. Nobody would be forced to pay that way

And just like that no way backpacks and Dwemer mud crab will be sold (especially the ones made by the community members).

That's exactly what they are planning.

Second, if Bethesda decides to sell something like horse armour again, then someone will just release it on Nexus. The community absolutely doesn't lose anything from this as Bethesda is NOT locking or releasing old mods again. This also prevents people from spamming and filling the store with crap like before.

It's going to be fresh, original mods made by the dev team and top creators.

This was the problem they ran into the last time they tried this bullshit. Mods often have inter-dependencies with other mods. To install one you need to install others. So why should a modder who is using a free mod to push out his paid mod profit off someone's else's work? Especially if that someone else believes strongly in keeping modding free.

This system already exists. Mods often come with a link where you can tip the creator for their efforts. Problem was, Bethesda wasnt getting a cut in that situation. They are basically solving a problem that doesn't exist.

Even having said that, if a company like Steam or CD projekt tried this, I would be a little less cautious. I wouldnt like it but I would be somewhat ok with it.

But I do NOT trust Bethesda. They make great games but they are a lawsuit happy scummy company.

And this is a very legitimate issue that was brought to light, MOD teams are not static, people come and go all the time. How do they decide who gets a cut, how much, when, where?

Don't really see the fuss if the mods are good quality.

Modding requires time & resources. Who are we to question if the mod developer wants to make some money and joins Bethesda?

If you're good at something, never do it for free.

Most of them are available for FREE on Nexus. If you still want to show your support to developers, you can. It's not like they are taking down the Nexus.

PREY Space Suit and Power Horse Armor are not available. Also, modern furniture. But you can surely find an alternate.

Most of the mods are not available for consoles users and it is clearly targetted towards them. They already pay for playing online, so you think they won't mind paying for mods for their games?

This is a beta, so I'm going to hold my judgement until it's fully released and has more content.

Could be said of the first foray into paid MODs too, this is low tier garbage that at max comes of as a retexture exercise.

I doubt anyone is going to do total conversions associated with this programme.
