Why PS3 is the best console till date (with why XBOX 360 is worst)

You want to run your own homebrew code on an off-the-shelf Xbox 360 just because you wrote it? I am sure even PS3 doesn't allow that. You have to have a debug unit to play unsigned code and that's applicable for all the consoles, no matter which company is making them.

MS XBLA has come under quite a lot of flak for creating hurdles for game developers, yet top-notch quality titles like Braid and indie-efforts like Dishwasher have ended up on XBLA and have had quite a romp in the lime light.

You being a game developer, do you find it easy to show case your game on PSN?

Yes PS3 does allows to run home brew code. That is where PS3 Linux comes in picture. I don't need to go to PSN store. I can develop for it without going online. Thats the best part.

BTW great amount of homebrew effort (Way better and extended than XBLA) is PSP homebrew effort. And now PS3 effort as well. You can find all kind of Linux games, Some OLD dos games port and ofcourse plethora of custom made games.

That much more easier than XBOX and the library is really large. XBLA will not compare at any given day.

You seem to be getting your facts all wrong. If developing games on Linux running on PS3, you do not have access to RSX of the PS3. Hence, it cannot be EVER compared with what you do for XBLA using XNA.

Even with my limited knowledge about game development, I can at least say that games you can develop on Linux running on PS3 can also be developed on Linux running on a normal PC. Correct me if I am wrong here.

To add to your knowledge. It is possible to access RSX without modding PS3, Access is provided through PS3's hypervisor (Visualization tool)

Yes you are wrong PC uses i386 (sometimes called x86 architecture), where as PS3 uses IBM Cell Broadband engine. To develop on that IBM Cell SDK provides the dev environment.

I would recommend you read the following article (others interested PS3 Development as well)

Abstract: The Sony® PLAYSTATION® 3 (PS3) is the easiest and cheapest way for programmers to get their hands on the new Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell BE) processor and take it for a drive. Discover what the fuss is all about, how to install Linux® on the PS3, and how to get started developing for the Cell BE processor on the PS3.

I will read up on the Hypervisor.

Edit: Can you show me some article where it tells you if Hypervisor on linux has access to the RSX 2D acceleration and it's 256 MBs of ram.

However, your second part of the reply didn't answer my core question...can the games developed on Linux running on PS3 can be developed on Linux running on a PC or not?

Enjoy:

http://wiki.ps2dev.org/ps3:rsx

Framebuffer is well supported there. YDL ogl support is also being worked on. Meanwhile 2d platformers are good to go. And basic 3d works. See these videos:

www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=23369

And yes you can develop for PS3 from a PC running linux using GCC (Cross Compiling). Get the tool chain from

http://ps2dev.org/ps3/Tools/Toolchain/ps3t...0070626.tar.bz2. If you have only windows then you can try cygwin (www.cygwin.org)

In addition to all this brilliant and bright guy name Ranulf Doswell is developing Open GL ES implementation for PS3 that doesnt require RSX access. He also have developed a few excellent games for PS3. take a look at

Do let me know if you are not clear.

Its all just opinions. Forums will always have discussions and debates. And it is pretty normal for a gaming forum to have debate on Consoles.

BTW: I think moderators should use less f**k. It will set bad example for rest of us.

the only thing i can see in this thread is no matter what happens or whatever the fact is, the Guy who created this thread has decided that he wants to prove that PS3 is better console than 360... :wallbash:

Thats stating the obvious. Absolutely not unbiased opinions there.

I am sharing my opinions people are sharing there opinions. Thats how we keep this thing rolling. Proving the point is the main thing here.

However it will help the new guys who wants to decide on which console to buy. I wish I could have seen this discussion earlier. I could have saved my money on XBOX360.

I have one more point here:

BD-J

Besides Linux PS3 also provides BD-J. BD-J refers to the application programming environment that support Blu-ray systems, and allows Content Providers to deliver highly-interactive, highly-programmable titles to end users. BD-J is based on the Personal Basis Profile (PBP) of the CDC Configuration of Java ME, and earlier on the JavaTV specifications.

One more good news is, although BD-J is applicable for all Blue Ray player, but none of the early players, except for Sony's PlayStation 3, support advanced features such as expanded local storage (persistent memory), picture-in-picture, or internet access. Collectively, these features (other than internet access) are referred to as "Bonus View", and the addition of internet access is called "BD Live."

Good thing is BD-J allows not only Blue-Ray disks to have more content but you can run stand alone BD-J programs as well.

Proof of Concept: PS3 Filer with NES emulation support (Early release, dont yell out if something doesn't work):

PS3 filer is a Windows explorer like tool for PS3. Now it runs your old NES games as well.

Download it at: http://www.mediafire.com/?ekgcpjdlh3f

Installation:

* Unzip the ps3filer.zip archive

* Copy NES ROMs to the AVCHD directory

* Copy the AVCHD directory to the root of a USB/Flash drive

* Go to the device in the XMB video menu and launch “AVCHD”

Nothing of what you've stated in this thread so far will swing anybody except maybe HotPixel.

Wat kinda personal attacks

Comment on content, not on the contributor. May be admins and moderators should take of this thing, but unfortunately it looks like they do this a lot.

Debate is an essential part of the culture (specially for forums). Different contributors often do not agree on some of the content within an article. Contributors often are members of opposing communities who wish to have their viewpoints included in articles. Synthesizing these views creates better content.

As a matter of polite and effective discourse, comments should not be personalized and should be directed at content and actions rather than people. :(
