Rumour: Gearbox developing Halo 4

Gearbox developing Halo 4

Rumour. Strictly a rumour for now, but still a very juicy one which goes back a long way to the beginning of this year when Gearbox Software announced that they were working on a super secret and unannounced title. It was big, they said. Really, really big.

All very well and interesting stuff, until everyone forgot about it. Everyone that is, except for the Official Xbox Magazine who went ahead and did some investigating and heard from inside sources that the new project was...Halo 4.

According to these anonymous sources and their info and speculation, Gearbox has been working on Halo 4 since February under Microsoft's order and the plan is to release the game as a launch title for the new Xbox 720 model, the successor to the Xbox 360.

Bungie meanwhile has stated quite emphatically that it has no interest in creating more and more Halo games for the rest of time. Thus, with Microsoft retaining the license to future Halo titles and Gearbox having a history of making both excellent games of their own and top quality expansion packs like Half-Life: Opposing Force, the rumours does seem quite possible.

On top of all that, the top brass at Gearbox is apparently involved in the project with company head Randy Pitchford stepping in as director to the secret game, though nobody at Gearbox has yet directly confirmed or refuted the rumour.

What do you think? Do you buy into the gossip, or is Microsoft going to let Halo die?

Gearbox responds to Halo 4 rumor: Confirms that it is indeed a rumor

Earlier today we mentioned a Rumortoid suggesting that Gearbox (Brothers in Arms, Aliens: Colonial Marines) might be working on a brand new Halo sequel. The rumor came from Official Xbox Magazine and suggested that this title would be for Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor console.

We decided to get in touch with Gearbox for a comment on all this chittle chattle. The studio confirmed that this rumor is totally a rumor:

We’ve been hearing from a lot of people regarding that rumor, as you can probably guess! We haven’t made any official announcements regarding any work with the Halo franchise – if we haven’t put out a press release announcing a title, it is just a rumor.

Rumor is a rumor -- CONFIRMED!

It's the expected response, and brings us no closer to the truth. I don't imagine that, if the aforementioned press release exists, we don't be seeing it for a long while yet. Still, rumors and gossip are so much fun.
