Thats why the current era lead in ac odyssey is a woman, and then she is able to select male or female while playing. Hopefully in AC Valhalla they designed both characters from the start and the male character doesn't suck like AC odyssey. That guy was clearly an afterthought.

""""Lead"""""

Literally the Layla Hassan character is a fig-leaf for the nuAC series, seems to be kept to keep continuity that this is an AC game

Always knew the story was built around Kass and they just phoned in Alexios because "women don't sell".

Also yeah imagine a woman entering the Animus as a dude. What do you think the first thing she's gonna do once she is in?

Without Layla Hassan, people will literally forget that the game is called Assassin's Creed in the first place. Do you see any Assassins in Origins and Odyssey? (Other than the 2 minutes at the end) Any Templars? Heck, can you even assassinate in the games? Valhalla looks even worse, they just shoehorned in a hidden dagger "just because Assassin", that is used in open combat. Not Assassination of course - at least not unless you are "Of The Appropriate Level". How will we ever make up for the MTX Loss otherwise? Whole company will sink right?

Frankly, these days I kinda feel they should be a separate IP altogether.

That's exactly what i said lmao

She has no purpose otherwise

I heard in the OG trilogy with all famous dudes like Altair and Ezio, the current gen dude was called Desmond Miles, and you could assassinate etc as him, never seen the Layla chick do that

I think they got the idea for all this with the AC3 Native american dude with the axe

People never liked the modern-day segment, would always complain about it, so they've made it as minimal as possible. But yeah, earlier Desmond could run around and assassinate and stuff. I remember in Brotherhood they gave you modern-day Monterigionni to explore, which looked 90% same as old one only with street lamps and cars and stuff.

Honestly I kind of liked the Desmond story because back then it seemed like there was a point to it. Like it was heading to some conclusion where the final AC would be completely modern day with Desmond as the lead. They also had some nice characters like that smart-a*s English dude and Kristen Bell as Lucy. But then AC got too big that they couldn't conclude it. Lost all interest in the modern day story line after AC3, where Desmonds story is finished.

Desmond Miles had a purpose to the story. Actual AC story is taking place in the current times. And the entire lore of the series is in the current times. The entire Animus is essentially "Look at your ancestor to learn his/her skills and find the Ancient Artifact", but the main story was in present. It allowed AC series to proceed ahead as almost all Assassins Creed cells were destroyed by templars, remaining Assassins regrouped and tried to fight against them, Juno was released in present day etc. After Desmond, the series is stuck in a rut. They should get rid of Animus itself and set the games in past - but they don't want that. They also don't want the present story to progress. Hence, the entire series is going nowhere at all.

I remember in one of the interviews back in 2006-07, someone said the purpose of modern day setting and Animus in AC1 was to have an excuse to put up all the modern UI elements like health bar, map markers, GPS etc into ancient times. Think about it, the first and second games were perfectly fine as pure period pieces (like Tsushima) without all the Animus jumla. They came up with an entirely parallel story line just to put GTA radars in 12th century

Quite a poor excuse considering there were historical games which had "Modern Conveniences" like healthbar, maps etc. Like say Onimusha etc.
