A deep dive into Career Mode on FIFA 20

Press Conferences & Player Conversations

As we just mentioned, our main drive is adding highly relevant features that would represent an important step forward for Career Mode and especially Manager Career. This year, the new feature lineup is represented by Press Conferences, Player Conversations and all of the intricate tools and logic sitting behind these features.

The new tools developed in-house by the Career Mode team enabled our producers and designers to leverage this large amount of data and create an enormous variations of story-lines that are deeply rooted in the player’s experience and your way of playing. This means that the experience of each match will be treated differently by the ‘journalists’ and will always feel authentic and dynamic, depending highly on the outcome, goals scored, opponent, time of season or stage of competition, and more.

In the same way as with Press Conferences, the newly added conversations enjoy the same level of complexity. The manager will have to deal with a variety of requests from players as well as happy or disgruntled players that are trying to get their thoughts across. The manager will have to find ways, either through direct actions or by communicating his/her stance in order to mitigate and solve these situations.

Player Morale System

Morale will be influenced by a multitude of different factors, ranging from play time and wage expectations to a player’s performance on the pitch and how well the team is doing. Secondly, answers in Press Conferences and replies to players in 1-on-1 conversations impact players’ morale as well. Having a high morale will be highly desired as a player’s morale will influence their attributes in upcoming matches.

Manager Customization

You may have noticed a manager in the screenshots above that you are not familiar with. This manager was created in game with our manager creation tools. We are finally taking a leap towards in-depth customization of your Manager Avatar.

Live News Screenshots

Another area where we aimed to deliver more diversity year over year and leverage the player’s in-game experience was the ‘News’. In FIFA 20, we will use gameplay screenshots showing key moments of any given match and creating relevant pieces of news from this content. In this way, we now have the means to highlight memorable moments during your Career Mode experience and allow you to build and surface your own stories.

League UI Themes

Going even further into the realm of authenticity and creating experiences that are relevant for our users, we wanted to come up with a visual take that is unique for some of the most played leagues within Career Mode. The result is 5 unique Central Menu UI treatments that heavily reflect the authentic branding of: the Premier League, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, LaLiga Santander and MLS. Besides these, our players will still enjoy the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League branded UI accompanying these competitions’ fixtures.

Dynamic Player Potential

Potential for players within your own squad will evolve over time based on the players’ performance in the previous season. Scored a lot of goals with a young prospect in his breakthrough season? His potential will be even higher in the upcoming season. Kept a run of good performances going with an older player close to retirement? His potential will be higher in the upcoming season which means that the decrease of his attributes will stall for a longer period of time.

Potential will decrease if a player hasn’t been performing well in the previous season or he hasn’t received enough playtime so you must ensure high promising starlets put in the work to achieve their potential.

Finally...

Sadly it looks like that every year :(

I skipped since Fifa 16. I tried 18 on PC (baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaD!). The FUT scene on PC was not to my liking.  Skipped 19 as well.

Im hoping to bag some of those icons (hopefully its not all luck based).

It has got a lot better this year (FIFA 19). With addition of Rivals the market is more stable and not expensive always. Obviously top tiers are expensive but you also get more value for your players.

Current FUTTIES season has been fantastic; even for new players to jump in and make mega squads.

Those are some nice additions to the Career Mode. ?

Dynamic Player Potential will be very good. No more just buying high potential player.

They are also fixing Youth players physical attributes which also helps with managing squad. Looking forward to it as usual.

Yes, finally some changes to the career mode.

Now I can actually develop youths that I want to, rather than banking on some FM type progression. Having said that, I hope FM 2020 takes the cue and does the same.

  • 2 weeks later...

Absymall gameplay. Players are on Skates ffs. There is no downtime in gameplay to actually think to create a goal. Its all f**king nonsense this gameplay now.  Tailored for Kiddies to have some fun. Bullshit.

Not interested in Volta so cant comment there but with the amazing changes to Pro Clubs and Career mode it is such a letdown for me to have gameplay like this.

It's not a simulation... Each half last for 6 minutes. Second, games are like that in real life too. It's all fast paced and moved on from 80-90s slow era.

Liverpool literally won CL by playing high pressure roller stakes... ?‍♀️

Some mystery ball gameplay

and a rare positive video from Kurt :panic:

  • general game speed: "initially unplayable", update made the game quicker and "bearable". he thinks the gamespeed is still on the slower side but it's fine. he then goes on "slow vs. fast" gameplay and that they won't be able to please everyone in that regard and why he thinks a fast game is better: the quicker it is, the higher the skill gap is (reactions) plus it's more action-packed. "it should be an arcade game with realistic features" (impossible to recreate a 45 minute half football game into 6 minutes)
  • defending: "manual defending is the best it has ever been". you have to select the player closest to the ball to defend well. player switching was reasonable good for him (with LB), issues with right stick. manual jockeying was very good, almost too good. new tackling system, if it works, it's beautiful, but it was inconsistent.
  • dribbling: the biggest issue in the whole game. it's a little bit better than '19 but no where on the level of '18.
  • strafe dribbling lb/rb [crab walking from FIFA17]: it's not that overpowered, but he doesn't understand why a mechanic that allows you to dribble that way backwards is in the game
  • skill moves: "they are exactly how they should be". it takes more skill to do them because you have to time them right and pick the right one. "Kazooie was in tears".
  • timed finishing: they got it right. you don't feel that you have to do it all the time, especially inside the box. the crazy speed boost is gone and it's way harder to hit it green.
  • shooting in general: it's much better than '19 in general, but still too inconsistent for his liking. driven shot same issues as in '19. finesse shots were good. chipshots were useful and you can go by the GK easier.
  • goalkeeper movement: "Spiderman has become Peter Parker". you can move them a little bit and maybe read the save, but it's nowhere near what it was in '19. even moving the keeper in the right direction doesn't always help in saving the shot. "they got it right."
  • passing: more error-prone in general. he didn't have an issue with passing in the past.
  • crossing/headers: nerfed to the point that they are irrelevant.
  • free kicks and pens: he hated them. "free kicks were so complicated", he thinks that they overthink/overcomplicate it.
  • overall thoughts: it got major issues that shouldn't be in an early release, especially the dribbling. but overall, even in the current state, easily one of the best FIFA he has played, the foundation for a good game this year is there.

No more lol croq spam, no more headers and volley spams, slower game in UT, skill gap increased, no more GK movements like crazy. Easily one of the best FIFA he has played. :wOOtjumpy:
