I was told this was the appropriate thread to make this post.

I just started browsing these forums today, and suffice to say, I'm relieved that theres an India-centric forum dedicated to PS3 owners. Most of the info that I've found over the net has been in regards to PS3 users in the USA etc, so I needed a localized opinion about how things are in India.

I have a few of questions, some of which were answered specifically on the board, others which are still a bit hazy, so here goes...

1. The 40gb PS3 in India is listed at 24,990...Has anyone heard of an upcoming price reduction within the next 6 months? Should I wait for the price to go down, or does this seems to be the actual price for the foreseeable future?

2. Is it wise to go for a US version console, maybe a the new 65nm 60GB or even the 80? The price is pretty much the same when you go for the higher 80GB when compared to the Indian 40GB, but my concerns are with playing dvds', blue ray movies, and the lack of a warranty. I have an SDTV and have about 30-40 dvds that I bought from canada that should play on the ntsc system, the rest were purchased in India. The more pressing concern however has to do with the lack of any insurance with no warranty if I were to buy the PS3 from the US. Is a US PS3 covered at Sony India? I would think not. Also, I've seen quite a few people have bought their PS3's abroad, how have you dealt with the lack of customer support as far as the warranties go in India? Wouldn't it be preferable to purchase the system in India and have the security of at least a 1 year warranty?

3. Being that I live in Chennai we have frequent power cuts, and interestingly enough its seasonal (when the monsoon comes late, we have more of them...Or if its unbearably hot). There are scheduled and unscheduled power cuts. Sometimes there are 3 a day, and sometimes theres one in 3 months. So its pretty random. I have considered buying a good quality UPS, but I read on one of the threads on this board that the UPS doesn't give the necessary power supply thats required for the PS3. This would cause the mobo to overheat, and inturn do more damage by trying to play it safe. What are the thoughts on this board? Should I buy a UPS? SHould I only plug it in when I'm downloading an update on my PS3? Lets say I'm playing a game and the power goes off. Will it do any damage to the PS3, as I've seen that Sony clearly states you should not use a UPS. I even read on this board that some users where finding tiny scratches on the disc after a power blackout. Also when updating the ps3 and then suffering a blackout, does it just corrupt the data that you downloaded, or does it actually affect the PS3 hardware, where in it is doing physical damage? If I just have to re download the update, I don't mind, as I have an unlimited connection.

4. Is there going to be a new release coming out for the 40gb ps3 where the dualshock 3 controller comes in the box, or are they going to continue providing the sixaxis controller instead?

5. I have a Tata Broadband connection at 384k unlimited. My download speeds when using torrents are at around 40-45k download...

I did a speed test on speedtest.net and these were my stats from the mumbai server:

Test 1: 389 dl, 461 ul, ping 97ms

Test 2: 393 dl, 466 ul, ping 92ms

Test 3: 393 dl, 453 ul, ping 94ms

Average connection speed: 391.6dl, 460 ul, ping 94.3ms

Is this sufficient to play games on the PSN? Do I need a 512K connection or even a 1mbps one, or will the 384K suffice? In theory, how much lag would I experience (ping) if I were to stick with the 384K connection?

6. How many Chennai residents are there on this board? What are your experiences with the PS3 in regards to my questions?

Those are all my questions for now, would really appreciate some input from as many people as possible. The more the merrier,as I want to draw a consensus on whether now is the right time to get the PS3...

going for an out of region console is highly "not recommended" even if PS3 craps out rarely on you.

Having a UPS is not recommended either officially by Sony and Sony will not cover your console if there's some problem in the future !

I would say wait till the Diwali season and check any local discounts before getting a PS3 :)

And oh btw, PS3 is good only with HDTV, with SDTV, ummm....not recommended. So wait till Diwali and see if your local shopkeepers can give you a HDTV+PS3 combo offer :)

yeah dude, PS 3 + HDTV = Heaven.

as Neo said, wait till deewali for any offers/discounts in local stores, and yes highly recommended to buy official PS3 if u want warranty(don't go for grey, it doesn't cover warranty, but PS3 hardly needZ warranty coz itZ ain'tZ no 360 :rofl2: )oh and ps3's in grey comes with DS3 already, i had mine white ps3 with bundled DS3

I've seen how a PS3 performs on an SDTV, the performance is not hindered, just the quality on the screen, which I don't mind. I'll be getting an HDTV in about a year, and this is a fairly new SDTV which is also quite large, so I don't mind playing on it until I get a new one...

So having a UPS is not recommended. So how do u deal with power blackouts? Does it corrupt your data? Affect the game disc? Will it do damage to the hardware? What are the proper precautions that I can take? Can I atleast put PS3 through a voltage stabilizer that you use on your fridge or A/c unit?

unless it is some very high voltage fluctuation, it shouldn't harm ur ps3 internals. And I dont think powerout will corrupt your data, unless u r saving or something at that time. A powerout during a firmware update might screw ur system ! I think the MGS 4 edition of PS3 released with DS3....or not, I'm not sure :)

Ok cool...Do you have a PS3? Do you keep a UPS handy for occasions like firmware upgrades? Should I buy a UPS just for that?

Also, can I just download the upgrade off of PSN through my computer? Can you get everything u get on PSN through ur PS3 via the computer as well? Including demos? And the new homefolding program?
