I would recommend playing these classics, some of them are even more fun than Doom 2016:

Painkiller

Painkiller: Battle out of hell

Serious Sam: The First encounter HD

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter HD

Serious Sam 3

All these are fantastic shooters with AAA production values. Amazing enemies, hidden secrets, fantastic and unique weapons.

Painkiller hasn't aged well I guess

I disagree. Painkiller has aged pretty well.

Anyway, back on topic. I am enjoying this but I feel like they have made combat unnecessarily over-complicated. I really miss the simplicity of Doom 2016.

That doesnt mean its a bad sequel. Its still a very solid 9/10. Just not as good as Doom 2016.

Maybe because Arc Complex map is already cramped up, no bigger enemies can fit and they just cannot just double the enemies just for the sake of difficulty.

Yeah, that's probably why.

I've played them all except for SS3, which I only played for a couple of hours. I think there were some issues with co-op and then I gave up on the game entirely. Will hopefully get back to it soon.

And yeah people should definitely check these games out if they haven't. Painkiller especially is f**king awesome!

I really hope there is a resurgence of arena shooters post success of doom eternal. They were making another serious Sam game which was due to release this year. Ss badass planet or something. Don't know what happened to the title

Yes that is delayed. But it was more an open world title and it kinda moved away from arena shooter. Even more open world than original Serious Same games.

Marauder is easy, the thing which irritates is other enemies around. Kill them all first. Just keep the distance from him, kill his dog, wait for the reversal window, hit with super shotty, instanly switch to balista, rinse & repeat.

Whenever you face him, make sure to only use the balista and super shotty, press q to instantly switch between those two weapons. He is a disappointing enemy tbh, had hyped me but what a waste. Gimme proper 1 vs 1 Boss ID.

Doom 2016 is superior here in this regards.

If you found the Marauder easy to deal with... good for you! :good:

But I did NOT! That guy was the single most annoying enemy to deal with for me. What makes it even worse are the other minions which regularly spawn around him and his damn wolf that he repeatedly unleashes on you, uuf! :wallbash:

One thing I was really hoping they would improve from the first game was the Power up items (double damage etc) but its somehow worse here. Most of the times I would find the power up AFTER I had killed everyone and everything. And even when I did pick up the power ups, I genuinely didnt know what they would do. Its a tiny flash on the screen that is pretty vague.

I dont know if this is just me though. But for me it was bad in Doom 2016 and its worse here.

Anyway, finished it. Before I sh*t on it, I just wanna say I really enjoyed the game and while its not worth it at full price, if you are sharing a steam account with someone it is worth it at 50% off. So, I just really disagree with the direction they went with for this. I felt Doom 2016 nailed the right level of "modernization" i.e complexity mixed with classic "mindless shooty mcbang bang ultra violence". Eternal feels like its leans hard on modernization and pulls back even harder on mindless shooting. Between the chainsaw, flamebelch, alternate fires, Freeze grenades, double jump, double dash etc there is too much to juggle to just enjoy the combat as bit of mindless fun. And unless you are playing on the lowest difficulty you will have to juggle all of those items and abilities.

I guess it depends on what you really wanted from the game. I just wanted to run around shoving my super shotty's barrel up demon nostrils. If you wanted a more tactical approach mixed with that, this is probably more down your street.

It was same for me too, found the powerups after I've cleared the demons, when you accidentally find one in the midst of chaos you don't know what it does.

Just finished the game. Enjoyed it to the D but I totally agree with @Aftrunner The game seemed unbalanced at many points. Specially when you have to scout for ammo amidst every encounter. I mean just 2 shells of BFG :\. Loved the platforming and the verticality those monkey bars brought to the game and those frantic battle arenas. I hope they bring in a jetpack in the next iteration. Also, the h.u.d was too small for my liking. In the heat of a battle, I lost track of ammo many times. And yes, the timing of Marauder and Arch-Vile seemed to be wrong, always lol. I mean after an excruciating battle, when you are out of ammo, those demi bosses get spawned :nerves:

The BFG is just a "Get out of jail free" card. Having more ammo for it would actually make the game unbalanced.

Also, I don't really get the ammo complaint. Just whip out your chainsaw every once in a while :\

I loved this approach because you pretty much have infinite ammo but you still kinda have to earn it. So it doesn't feel like you're using cheats either.

It encouraged me to have fun with the more powerful weapons as well. Whereas in other games, I would usually hoard ammo for the powerful weapons in fear that I might have to use them against some tough boss later on, only to find myself never actually using them much.

I would have preferred a nerfed BFG with more ammo. Some demons, rather most demons, are bullet sponges. Ammo capacity of guns is low when compared to the number of bullets required in a fight to clear out an area. Though I agree that chainsawing is a nice mechanic but sometimes it gets a tad repetitive.
