What the absolute f**k did I just hear? That's just brutal

I think what he meant is that people who already built their digital library during PS4 generation will not abandon PS and stick with Xbox even if games are good on Xbox.

PS5 owners might buy xbox as secondary console but not gonna abondon PS5 and make xbox as main console. I also bought XboxSX coz of library i made during Xbox one gen. As long as i can i will continue to buy both console for that same reason.

I have a digital library and wont abandon no matter how good Xbox exclusives are.

He really phrased it poorly and i think hardcore xbox fans wont take it lightly. He was bit too frank and cranky and also look visibly frustrated in interview.

Why is he worried about not being able to make people sell their PS5's?! Shouldn't the goal be to make them buy a second console say XSS or XSX?

I do feel a little sad for him, but the ghosts of the Xbone gen still hangs near it seems.

He clearly look frustrated. Very bad week for xbox. Abk issue plus people attacking him with really awful messages on twitter.

Guess he didn't realise what he saying will not be taken lightly by community. I get logic behind what he saying but you shouldn't say it publicly no matter what. It will kill trust of fans.

Having said that, one of the reasons he is sounding like this is to get some leverage for Activision deal.

What Spender thinks he will be doing in few months (in case the activision deal goes through, thanks to his crying)

This is pretty much what I thought as well. Phil is an idiot for phrasing it the way he did though.

Phil doesn’t believe good games will change anything

The EU and US Anti-competitive bodies can literally take the case of the PS3, and it will prove the entire point wrong.

PS3 had all the disadvantages -

1) Nightmare for devs to program for

2) Late launch compared to competition

3) More expensive than competition

4) No famous studio acquisitions and very little timed 3rd party exclusives

And yet - once Sony rolled back their sleeves and made 90+ games, starting with Uncharted 2 (and MGS4 from 3rd party) - there was no looking back. It then led to the legendary PS4 - The true successor to the PS2.

Meanwhile MS acquired a lot of studios and did not develop much at all.

Ya really poorly made statement. Came out as weak. We all know MS not catching up to Sony in consoles and they have to carve out their own path and that path is delivering quality content on Game pass and different devices which powers Game pass. Ecosystem will not get stronger without quality games. Game pass need quality games to grow.

But like i said in previous he looked rough in that interview. Tired and frustrated. I totally expect he will quit if Starfield and Hellblade 2 fails as well. These 2 games will decide future of Phill imo.

No watch interview again.

He said PS4 gen was the worst gen to lose coz in that generation people on PS made their big digital library and now they will not abandon it even if Starfield is 10/10 game.

Will u sell PS5 and buy Xbox if Hellblade 2 is like God of War?  No, you will just make it secondary console or most probably invest in Game pass through PC.

I dont think he meant that good games not needed and xbox shouldn't focus on good games. He saying just good games wont help Xbox console take PS share away in world market. They need new way to compete just like Nintendo doing with Switch by carving out their own Path backed by quality games.

This is how i took his statement. I watched whole interview.  Yes, people might look at me and label me as Phill apoplogist and that's fine but i think many people taking his statement bit wrong way.

In the PS3/360 gen - Xbox had tons and tons of games. Halo/Forza/Gears were at their peak. Fable was a blockbuster. They had tons of 1st and 3rd party exclusives (Including even GTA 4 DLC).

The same argument was there then - would people sell their X360 to buy a PS3? It would always be a secondary console right? Look at what Sony did after that. PS4 Library is a continuation of the efforts that started from mid-gen of PS3. You did not have Yoshida crying like what Phil Spencer is doing. Now here we are. There is a precedent of a company succeeding as soon as they introduced good games. Hence Spencer's arguments fall flat. People won't care much of old BC games. They want new 90+ games, whether it's a new ip or an existing one.

And here I was thinking PlayStation was going backwards by shutting down Japan Studios.

And Xbox had taken lead with games like Psychonauts 2, Hifi Rush etc.

why is nobody here hinting that he might have said this to just get the deal passed :hi2:

They might just want to show to CMA that they are indeed a lost ship and need the deal to sail through? Just a thought.

That is obviously what it is. Spender is not the most opaque dude.

I have said the same thing multiple times before, only reason why they came up with gamepass is because they can't compete otherwise.
