Ps digital is preservation(unless Sony suddenly decides to stop backward compatibility in future). just my thoughts. 2 cents - Steam is in a mature shape since the very concept/architecture of PCs is still the same. You've Windows primarily running on top of things, and most games designed for XP or later era would still work. Steam/MS won't lock you out of the ecosystem if you suddenly upgrade to Windows 11 or maybe Windows 21 in the future. Consoles, heh. They can make your digital purchase go kaput in an instant by closing their online store. Look at what happened to Virtual Console on Wii. Nintendo touted it as the best thing after sliced bread, killed it, relaunched the service as NSO. I (guess) I cannot download games purchased on PS3 on PS5. Assuming that digital only content is the best way to preserve media is false consciousness. The digital info has to be kept somewhere "physically" right (backend servers sutuated somewhere). That's an additional cost to the company. Ps- Talking about older playstation/nintendo systems (nes/SNES/PS1/ps2/PS3/psp etc), the games are still pop and play. That's the best way to preserve games. Everyone has an internet connection either through broadband or cellular in phones. Even villages in India have Jio towers and they actually give 20-80mbps speeds because these towers are not choked up by metro-like population density. Not having an internet connection is an impossibility, so game verification part of the DRM issue is not an issue 2) Xbox game servers won’t shut down during the time when game stays relevant. It may be a problem if you want to play a 10-20 year old game and servers are shut down. People ?when trying to play 10-20 year old games because visuals are so outdated and they’d rather play recent games. Even if you want to play, you can see the whole playthrough on YouTube. They have allowed drm into their latest systems via a back door. Game preservation and drm just can't exist in a single sentence. Those who buying Xbox are aware of it. Those who have problem with DRM, will not buy it. Also Im pretty person who can afford Series X also got access to internet. No one buying 500$ consoles if they don't have internet access. Xbox one games need one time internet access for smart delivery system to check which version you got but SX games run offline once you install them. They delisted from Store as game was not selling anymore as those who intersted in the game already bought it. I mean game was on sale for 10$ before getting delisted plus it was free on Games with Gold, so pretty sure those who actually care already got it And T10 already moved to next FM game, so renewing licenses will not make any financial sense. FM7 Servers are online for players to play game afaik. GT5 and 6 got delisted and servers offline as well. You can't play them online. No company is blameless Licenses vagerah are just a sad fact of the industry, and shouldnt be interpreted as some evil wrong doing "spin" by any company. From EA with NFS to even Rocket League's themed DLCS, this is clearly an industry wide practice and expectation.
