OTP needs you to be connected to mobile network (for SMS OTP). Emails are a hit or miss depending on your luck. OTPs are the only reason why I bother with roaming. The default roaming pack which requires no recharge (be it Airtel/Voda/Jio), provides reception and incoming sms in the supported countries. I have been travelling without an international roaming pack on my Indian sim for quite sometime, communication is done by the 2nd sim in my phone is purchased locally. For airtel, go into the app and enable it (most likely already enabled). For jio, it's something similar. I usually used to do 99rs international recharge to make sure it works. Last couple of times, I didn't and reception/OTP never went away.

The basic pack where you don't get to send sms, make/receive call. Only thing allowed is receiving sms via roaming. That is free. I have not paid even on prepaid for last 2 trips to US/EU.

KunjanPSD
So here it is. My first miles redemption and damn, it has been a frustrating journey (more on that below) but the reward makes up for all of it and a lot more (gonna be a bit long). - Context: A couple months ago I started looking for DEL-JFK/BOS Biz class award tickets, for travel in one of the busiest seasons of the year. Pre-Christmas week. Should have started earlier but plans weren't concrete and the window of travel was quite short. It was going to be a long shot since availability on this sector and season goes by in a flash, generally requiring bookings to be made a year in advance. As expected, except AI, availability was practically non-existent (better to travel economy than AI). Some LOT or UK/TK (mixed cabin) were sprinkled here and there but none of the premium cabins and none in the week I targeted. Was doing at least 1 search across all of the major FFPs every other day, taking extensive time and effort. Targets were mid-level cabins of LH/LX (there was no way anything premium was going to open up) and initially had slight hope of bagging a last minute flight as per the ongoing pattern. This meant that I would likely have to keep investing time into searches and even then, only be able to get a confirmed booking days before departure. - The spiral: As soon as June began, the last minute availability stopped showing up. UA was dry. Season was turning out to be one of the most gruesome, even the most seasoned miles experts were at a loss. Was meant to only get tougher. Pent up demand and miles brokers were to blame. All of my potential plans were ruined, had no hope of finding anything worthwhile, gave up on the award hunt. Investing so much time into this, only to end up forking out the money from my own pocket, led to unparalleled disappointment. On top of it, Axis forced everyone to make a move. Transferred 80k to QR to diversify. Directionless transfer, had no intention of using these anytime soon. Still once in a while, I used to run quick searches on AA (for QR) and on UA/TK/AP but always ended giving up mid-way. - The clutch: 3 days ago, one of the members of a Credit Card Discord I am part of, mentioned that AA has stopped showing QR J availability. Did not think much of it first but later I found it to be a bit weird, for ages AA has been the go to searching & booking tool for QR J (for the west). The move looked odd. Decided to do quick searches directly on QR and found nothing. Repeated the next day and found nothing yet again. Then today, came across a post mentioning that QR has added a new daily for DOH-JFK. Did not give much attention but later had some free time in office, so decided to give it another try. AND JACKPOT! Not only DOH-JFK, got DEL-DOH-JFK QR J, that too QSUITES, on multiple days (starting 15th Dec). Got one on Dec 21st. Instantly flipped international transactions on CC and booked it. Could not believe it. Expected the booking to be a glitch and to be cancelled. From losing all hope and expecting to pay up to getting one of the best (if not the best) J cabin available, in the busiest season possible. Qatar Biz lounge at Doha awaits! Conclusion: Going to be travelling QR J this Christmas. Thanks to actual CC/AV geek knowledge. No 5% cashback card could have ever provided this. Supplementary: - Costed 80k QR miles (Avios) and 22k in taxes. - Similar QR J going for 2.4-2.8L, giving value of 2.725-3.225 Rs/mile (post deducting taxes) - This was possible because of a multitude of factors, I did put in time and effort but majorly came down to luck. - The reason AA stopped showing QR J was because AA removed their own DOH-JFK flight and QR saw the opportunity and added another daily. AA removed QR to not promote the better and cheaper option while the new flight wasn't even listed on revenue, reducing visibility. - Had miles in QR (because of Axis) and could book ASAP, otherwise it would have taken ages for points to transfer and by then availability would have gone by. It already has, all lapped up. - UA: United, UK: Vistara, TK: Turkish, LH: Lufthansa, LX: Swiss, AI: Air India, AA: American, QR: Qatar, LOT: Lot Polish, J: Business Class Edited August 20 by KunjanPSD 4
0verlord
I have an HDFC credit card. I increased the credit limit every time they offered me but I missed out on upgrading the CC when I got the email from them 1-2 years ago. Now I want to ask them whether I am eligible for upgrade. I have Imperia banking. Should I call my RM or CC customer care for CC upgrade? On 8/12/2023 at 6:11 PM, KunjanPSD said: Need to know a bit about your spend level and pattern. Their AMC if not met the yearly spend threshold is pain, I've had mine for 8+ years, thinking to surrender it as the acceptability is very low, almost every shop says "No we do not accept Amex", the cashback in form of points is 0.5% which is poor. Having other cards which give 1-5% with no annual fee, makes no sense to keep Amex alive.
