I lost interest in endgame the moment ant-man says time travel .... :-/

There was nothing to experience in that scene man,  its nothing different compared to similar scenes in tons of hollywood movies that came before it.  I think its one of the standard recipes of such movies, build up to an impossible event and then show help arriving from everywhere , how many previous movies have we seen this ? Not something I was expecting from a franchise like this.  And not just this, the whole movie is pure fan service , devoid of any good plot points or reasonable progression.  Also, towards the end , the whole rag-tag team of avengers seemed completely useless, just captain marvel was enough to kick the sh1t out of thanos and save the day  !

That's a standard template for all superhero movies or GNs from DC or Marvel. Boilerplate stuff, just that most non readers saw something like this for the first time and sh*t their pants.

I keep hearing this argument all the time man, 'hey its not schindlers list', 'its just a movie for kids', 'we just wanna have a good time', 'thats how the comic books was'.   I don't really agree with that.  If a multi billion dollar franchise can't invest in some intelligent writing to give a good ending to the fans who've followed the series for such a long time, then who else can ? Comics books was written for a different demographic and many of them were written in a different time.  People have evolved, their expectation have evolved (atleast for some).  Also, intelligent writing doesn't necessarily mean boring.  Schindler's list is not the opposite of endgame and shouldn't be treated as such.  But then again, people are free to have their opinions.  If they want to accept/expect mediocrity and pay top $$ for that, who am I to stop them

I totally agree. That's why most mainstream superhero stuff is bad. It follows a set template - world is ending, all heroes are dead, *poof* a savior/saviors appear, and everything is back to normal again.

Read any Superman or Batman stuff, and you can find the formula for every comic. Even when someone dies, revival is barely an incovenience.

The journey becomes incredibly boring since the actual stakes are low, and you know how the story would end. Endgame was pretty bad, specially when IW was paced beautifully.

Kong vs Godzilla suffers from the same issue - terrible writing and acting. Generic to the core. Rampage was written better than this. The CGI is bonkers though, so damn good, but ultimately, a pretty boring movie. The scene where Kong sits on the throne - so many questions, man ! I hope they expand the Monsterverse and do movies on how things work in Hollow Earth, hierarchy, monsters etc. That will be an interesting premise.

Deus ex machina is a very popular gimmick in movies and stories. People love it when it happens, in fiction or in real life like sports. Its not limited to just superhero movies, almost all battles in 20 hours of LOTR movies end with someone showing up at the last moment to save the day. Heck the battle of 5 armies is nothing but a montage of one side getting pummelled, losing hope, then some cavalry arrives and changes the tide....for like 5 minutes. Then rinse-repeat.

But are we comparing the writing of LOTR to that of superhero movies ? The phenomenon is an old trope, but at least surround it with sensible writing. We all know Frodo will save the day at the end, but the journey is extremely enjoyable. You do care (a little ?) for the main casts. There is layering involved. It's not a straight up CGI fest.

Nothing wrong with the gimmick - but there needs to be semblance of drama, high stakes, tension etc. The current crop of movies are just plain stupid. Everything gets eclipsed by CGI.

Heck, the first 15-20 mins of IW - set up the drama, stakes and tension perfectly.

Alien - technically a monster/creature movie, even after all these years holds the test of time. So many characters die, there's horror, and you feel it.

Among the more recent ones, Pacific Rim is nicely written and paced. Yes, it has its cheesy moments, but you still look forward to what happens next.

Kong vs Godzilla is a huge disappointment in that regard. Super lazy writing. In the same vein as Pacific Rim Uprising or Rampage. A CGI fest with no heads or tails.

Which could've all been avoided if they only used the eagles :fap:

I have never understood the point of too much attention to human chars and human subplots in these Kaiju or Transformer type films

It's because CGI is very expensive. Plus writers believe that it helps understand these characters from a human POV. But it's mostly the former.

Can't give screentime to monsters for 120 mins and push the budget.. More so now when there are no cinemas to pump those box office numbers..

Adding to this, it would be weird to have to titans fighting with no dialogs at all. There has to be some human involvement, to guide the viewer to know what's happening.

That said, they did the right thing avoiding the excess human sentiments from the first 2 Godzilla films.

Also, I find Rebecca Hall super attractive for some reason, would never say no to her if she returns for any possible sequels :P
