The Outer Worlds

Finished it. Level 30 and around 20 hours-ish. Kinda short for an RPG but enjoyable overall. If you have played Obsidian games before you probably know what you would be in for. Solid writing, interesting side quests and tons of ways to progress through them.

Not a fan of the art direction though. It looks very Borderland-ish. I also felt like none of the planets really had a "personality" of their own. Infact all the locations kind blend together and I would be hard pressed to tell one place apart from another even after finishing the story. The galaxy map in your ship makes the game look a lot more larger than it is because some of the planets are barely used in the main quest (do you even go to Scylla if you dont do companion quests?) and a couple of them are just one single location. Plus the fact that you often find the same 3-4 species of wildlife walking around all of these planets doesnt help them feel copy paste-ish.

On the plus side, I was surprised by how much fun the shooting and combat was. And since its an Obsidian RPG you can talk, lie, hack etc through a large part of the game as well. The core gameplay here is rock solid and if they ever do a sequel with a larger budget, I would be pretty hyped. I would not recommend this at full price but $20 ish you will definitely get your money's worth. Or grab the Xbox game pass and run through it in a couple of weeks.

Side note, Obsidian are the only devs who can write genuinely funny dialogue. The banter between your squadmates is top notch.

I was waiting for the switch version of Outer worlds but you know how that turned out. Since switch version was out of the picture, I went and bought the PS4 version. Been playing for a week or so and completed it now. I liked the game but it was a bit of a drag sometimes. Some of the characters are really cool but some are dull. They could have put in some more effort on fleshing out some of the characters. Again some of the side quests are fun but some are just fetch quests which will get tedious pretty fast.

I f**ked up with the progression system so at the end, I was kinda the Jack of all trades but Master of none. Final fight was tough so had to redistribute skill points to get the sneaky way out :P  Not a fan of the music used however dialogues are fantastic so is most of the VA. Overall pretty enjoyable game but its not New Vegas.

Just started playing this game. It's so much fun especially in the dialogue choices, so much sardonic and sarcastic humour as well as the satire on corporate life lol.

Quick question

Should I specialise in one skill or distribute to be a jack of all trades ?

Just reached lvl 2

I want to lockpick and sneak but I also want to lie and charm as well as beat up enemies

the writing in this game is super funny. The whole premise and the little jokes hidden inside terminal logs is damn funny.

I had a similar idea as you for my character. The skills strategy I followed was:

1. reached 20 in lockpick asap. This made sure I did not leave any containers due to lack of lockpicks.

2. then reached minimum 20 in all the skills as that ensures lot of basic bonuses and helps overall with the game.

3. Beyond 20, focused only on the skills I wanted (even ignored Leadership for 10 hours or so). Also stopped investing in melee and defense skills completely as I was using solely ranged weapons.

My character is at level 22 right now at no time in the 26 hours of playtime did the combat or game experience became challenging because of me not being jack of all trades. Just focus on Dialog, Stealth and Tech and you are good.

Thanks.
I am focusing now on melee and Persuasion along with stealth.

Game is really good, loving the dialogues and response choices.

It's really cool to slow down time and pulverise enemies with my axe.

This is what Fallout 4 should have been like. Damn you Bethesda.

finally finished it today. Took around 35 hours with all quests and side quests finished and all but 2 tasks completed. As warned by fellow IVGians, the mid game at Monarch  is weak as the number and substance of side quests just becomes ridiculous. You gotta ride through it.

But the beginning and the end are solid. Writing is satirical and super funny, especially if you are into dark comedy. Combat is addictive, although not needed that much. Quests can be completed in multiple ways . Also, I was super glad that there was an option to reset the skill and perk points for a ridiculously small fees, as my build was no good at all for the final 'level'. If not for that, I would have given up on the ending as my build was utterly useless for the last 'fight'.

all in all, recommended.
