PSFooty7
That sounds interesting. So do you need a separate pc for it or just connect HD to the router.? Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using TapatalkIt depends on the how you intend to use it. If you have family members wanting to stream 4K content to their room simultaneously then it would take a toll on your PC acting as NAS because it may have to transcode on the fly to different agents especially in case of TVs with bad codec support. But if you are the only user then you may as well combine NAS and PC as your viewing will involve “Direct Play” and fewer computing resources are utilised.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have been using Synology NAS for the couple of years. It has been working perfectly and has out of the box solutions for most of my requirements, including transcoding. Shantz
+1 for Synology. I don't use it for streaming, only for actual backups etc and it works well for me since last 6-7 years

Isn't the latter more reliable ?

Can retrieve even if no internet) - It is "yours" v/s cloud. (Cloud may go belly up, disaster at the cloud company, they block your account due to some reason) - Safety/Privacy (No doubt of getting hacked, can save in plaintext as well) - The 1-2-3 rule of backup. So, I still use cloud as well, NAS backs up onto the cloud every night but encrypts before that to protect my data.

The price is dependent on the model you choose. But Synology is not for everyone. It depends whether you require these many features. The best thing about it is the software. It is pretty smooth and doesn't give you a headache. I bought it sometime 3 years ago and it has been working flawlessly.

Interesting, I never knew these kind of devices were used for personal usage. I remember sometime back ppl used some RAID kind of setups for backing up data in small offices. Do these backup the data on some tape drive or something ? Or the regular HDD/SSD ?

Most use PURPLE or RED WD drives (Ones used in CCTV devices) . Never used RAID because data is not that important.
