kmkaks
It went great here in Kerala! People were out with diyas and candles in their terrace, balconies and yards, irrespective of religion or political affiliation. It was just about lifting the collective human spirit. There is no need to mix this with science and logic, human beings have emotional needs too. Edited April 5, 2020 by kmkaks

You should thank all the power plant engineers who adjusted the load and kept their fingers crossed that nothing blows up because our PM decided to host a light show. Hopefully he never takes such decisions again. Lighting candles, diyas etc was fine, but asking to turn off all lights and then turn them on all together at 9:09 was playing with fire.

Over the last 4 years I have spent great time studying electrical and electronics engineering under some of the best faculty in India who have served as chair persons in utilities like BSES etc and let me tell you that despite of what media is reporting, this power dip and recovery was much less than modern electronics and our grid's capacity. My profs. themselves vouched for this. So there wasn't really any threat with turning the lights on and off. But our engineers who are working to keep the power running deserve the appreciation nonetheless.

I mean, he did say lights. He never said that we have to turn off other things like computers, wifi routers, our consoles, fridge, microwave, whatever appliances you use. Just the lights. We can all agree the decision was taken in good spirit, and there weren't any big power failures or power grid collapse. All's well that ends well, eh? Plan worked, kudos. As far as people who let off fireworks, they're absolute morons and its because of people like this that the pollution levels go up.
