^ Yesterday, some intellectools & economists released a document which asks government to seize of private property, cash, savings, bonds....in order to fight Covid.

This is the problem.

India was pampered as Socialist Welfare state. Even when there were 2-3% taxpayers. Most of the jobs used to be in Public sector.

Entrepreneurship was frowned upon and anyway the consumption was too less. spending on public Infra was never a priority. Basically, we didnt have any money.

And thus cities other than which were already developed didn’t grow.

Even today, a moderate size state has no more than 2-3 Tier I cities.

We cannot reset this unless we push for more centralised structure. Because the leaders and CM’s of the states are more than happy in keeping the status quo.

Is mumbai that bad place to live in due to population ?

I see lots of posts on facebook like " once you live mumbai, theres is no place like it " , " i would rather live in mumbai than anywhere else "

Tbh, i twice visited it and hated it  lol.

Of course, it has its own charm.

And if you solely look at certain factors, no city comes close.

But many things solely depend on where you are coming from.

Agra or Alwar, Bangalore or Bharuch.

Cost of decent living, decent meaning what you think is decent wrto your standards, is very very high.

There's a term to describe it, its called Stockholm syndrome :P

I used to think that I'll never be able to live outside of that city, but now after 5 years of living away, every time I have to go there I feel miserable for the entire day.

If it's any consolation for them, their MLA has also tested positive.

Also people need to be aware of their social responsibility and not just blame authorities. The guy stays in the world's largest slum probably in a 8 X 10 room, is a daily wage earner and yet has 4 kids. He is also part of the problem

50 new cases in PCMC today, highest so far. One of them is pizza delivery boy at Dominos, one Doctor treating corona patients at YCM hospital and one contractor working at some German MNC. PCMC Commissioner is one of the most inept and corrupt persons I have ever seen. He is more focused on starting the industries than saving lives of people.

Compared to this, Nagpur Municipal Commissioner is the most badass IAS officer I have seen. He quarantined over 2000 residents in hotspots, against their will and outrage, and made sure the 90% of cases are limited to people in quarantine. When state declared Nagpur as non red zone in Lockdown 4.0 despite having 350+ cases, he rallied to make it red zone. He finally managed to do it from some technicality in states rules and now today he formed a task force to survey 1.3 Lakh residents and test their lungs, and will treat them proactively if they have some lung disease. He did similar earlier by isolating TB patients in hotspots. And all this when he has cases filed on him in High Court because he is refusing to relax measures in the city.

Few weeks back, Maharashtra had more cases than next top 2 states combined, then it became next 3 states.

Now it is fast approaching to have more cases that #2 + #3 + #4  + #5.

And they are testing really low, thanks to new commissioner.

Yesterday:    13166 tests - 2940 Positives - 22%

Day Before:   12386 tests- 2345 Positives - 19%

Compare it with Tamilnadu 6% with 12500+ tests.

Tamilnadu has done much more tests than MH.

In any state, people avoid local labour even if they have aplenty.

it might sound a little controversial but this is what my observation has been having lived in 4 states for a long time.

Being local, sort of gives them some air, some of them show up on job drunk, don’t work diligently and hangout with all kind of wrong people.

In MH, I both in Mumbai & Pune, I saw a thing called “Martahadi”. I might be spelling incorrectly, but it means if you employ labourers from other states, these goons show up at your doorstep and ask for what they think is a “compensation”.

Of course, they cannot extort this from big parties, but any normal guy paya that off just to keep the trouble away.

Big cities must expect a lot of migrant population, but bringing in a cheap labour means there would be a point local population cannot keep up with ever rising cost of decent living. This actually creates more poverty. The city infra can never keep up and everything goes for a toss.

Immigrant population cap laws for cities are must. Let supply be little less than demand. This would eventually help to grow other cities.

Lol friendo this is India.

All this would do if made real is make generic govt employees and babus all the more richer because of the bribes.

Your generic Bhaiyya types wanted to go back to UP Bihar whatever so Sarkar said they need to get tested for covid and get a certificate.

Of course they got certificates, but didn't get tested ;)

These sort of laws are only possible in places like China where a strong state enforces the laws that it wants with an iron fist, a strong state that is so top-down that your govt employees will not risk their neck even for sweet, sweet bribes.

If administration wants to, it can.

our country is broken, but if things are done with good intentions,, administration is kept in check, wonders too happen.

Indore became garbage free city, cleanest city in India because of initiatives taken by Collector, once he enforced things, followed it up, it became a public movement.

This guy was xfered out by Kamalnath when he came in, you know....the politics.

He was in Ujjain when healthcare workers pelted stones at. Shivraj Singh called him back from Ujjain overnight. Since then things have come under much in control. It could’ve easily gone Chennai/Mumbai way.

It all boils down to the quality of IAS officers. If Commissioners and District Collectors are good and free from political pressure, they can do wonders. When I was a kid, one dashing Municipal Commissioner was brought into Nagpur for several months only (he always gets transferred out in few months) and he just f**king destroyed the encroachments in prime Nagpur areas. Prominent Restaurants, shops etc were destroyed overnight. He transformed the city in few months he was there. Now if you visit Nagpur, you can clearly see the effects. Huge cement roads in all major areas, planned construction etc. (now all gone to sh*t due to Metro)

So it can be done if we have good bureaucrats. The politicians are gone case, party etc doesn't matter. All are for money.

Anyways, 3041 new cases in Maharashtra today. 50 new cases in my municipality PCMC.

To celebrate this, PCMC has allowed beauty parlors and saloons to start with some "strict" rules, and Maharashtra government has allowed 25 flights per day from Mumbai airport. :majesty:
