Why were people stranded in foreign countries flown in for free, but the poorest have to pay extra for going home, that too for a train that was specially started for them? How out of touch with reality do you have to be to stoop to this?

Charging for the trains its a shitshow really. Should have been free. But what did you expect?

Worst part was charging for trains after giving free flights to people who could more or less afford them. This is some next level class discrimination.

That's cause construction projects and rest is going to start soon so why send them home if they are getting their jobs back.

Actually it made no sense to send migrant workers back from Monday.

They have resumed all factories and other businesses from monday and carrying workers out of Bangalore.

They have even given permission for Serial shoot to resume from today in indoor studios.

Migrant workers are not charged for the trains.

85% is paid by railways and 15% paid by the state governments.

They are indeed traveling for free.

People have paid from their own pockets. Railways paid 85% is as real as I received 15 lakhs in my account.

As long as the state provides them the support needed until economy begins fully functioning, that wouldn't be so bad. But then if the state had done that in the first place, the workers wouldn't have wanted to go back home.

On the brighter side, UP has opened most kinds of shops on a rotational basis. Hopefully same will be done in other states where it is safe. 3 days wages every week will be better than nothing. People should be able to scrape by.

The trains and buses were specifically assigned special duty to take these workers to their homes. I dunno who's brilliant idea it was to charge them money for tickets.

It wasn’t idea.

it was a scam by usual suspects.

In MH, they even made migrant labourers  pay for health certificate, 200 rs for temperature and weight check.

Horrible people.

They aren't travelling for free. Not hard to find.

And if you cannot pay you won't get reimbursed of course because you didn't travel. Wah

Indian nationals being repatriated are being charged for their travel by flight or ship.

https://indianexpress.com/article/india/flight-plan-by-mea-india-to-operate-64-flights-to-bring-back-citizens-stranded-abroad-6394513/

The cost of train or bus fare is to be paid by the state which is sending the migrants or the state of origin of the migrants. There is bickering regarding the payment of fares between the states and center.

https://thewire.in/politics/opposition-pressure-modi-govt-migrant-workers-rail-fare

Some people may have already paid for their tickets; this is primarily due to the lack of clarity in communication by various government organisations (Center or Railways say 1=1 today, then proceed to turnaround and say 1=2 without addressing the previous statement)

Correct. My friend who has a number of jharkhandi labourers working for him said that the medical checkup was a normal flu test. They called the Guy at 6 in the morning and told him to come to the station at a certain time. The money is being made by the usual suspects like the TC, or railway/govt officials and is going directly into their pockets not the central/state coffers. Like how during your passport verification you have to give "chai paani" to local beat officers

@Walker I hope you and your family are well. How is the general situation in Goa?

All good so far. Everything is up and running. Traffic back on the streets. Very tempting to go out for a drive again like before but afraid to let my guard down just yet.

There's murmurs of opening the borders apparently but those are only rumors afaik.

There have been a few instances of people getting in even 2-3 weeks into the lockdown from Mumbai and places in Karnataka. These are not people from Goa so idk how or what happened but it happened apparently. Dunno what to believe lol
