The spin in that article

The click grabbing headline

Price will be dependent on who shoots first, the other guy will undercut them by $100.

Both have deep Pockets to absorb loss now just to get a lead early gen, X360 was steam rolling during it's era early on, and PS4 steamrolled this full gen without any stops.

So 65 to 70 K in India... With games priced at 4,999?

This gen the only two games I got day one were gears of War 4,and God of war, thanks to game pass got gears 5 free on day 1. Seems the trend will continue next gen.

It will be 349$ for digital and 449$ w/ disk.

that seems like the right price point .... maybe $449 for digital and $100 more for the other one if the above is untenable.  Anything more than $500 is difficult to afford especially when the world economy is on the recession !  Also, don't understand why is the cost of digital editions of the games are not reduced , considering the costs they are saving on manufacturing , distribution of disks, 3P profit margin etc.

Yeah, the profit margins on the digital sales are really good. Sony will be hoping people will get that version. If they price it well, they can easily (comparatively) recoup the losses on it.

Hey you forgot that glowing dildo-looking thing Sony had.

You mean Playstation Move? That's not "Had", they still use it. Currently I think it's being used in PS VR AFAIK. But anyway, even if it was a flop - it was still not a disaster for Sony like Kinect was for MS.They brought the entire license for a new technology from Prime Sense, an Israeli Company, and that tech failed. Meanwhile, motion controllers were old tech by the time Sony introduced Move, Sony did not have to innovate much for Move AFAIK and could develop it in-house, plus it's still used for VR.

AFAIK, the Kinect technology is being used quite successfully even now - in fields other than gaming. It's being used in Robotics, in computer graphics algorithms, in Mobiles etc. Currently Apple owns Prime Sense, the Studio that developed Kinect.

$699 still a good deal for these specs and we use these Beasts for good 5+ Years, how can we still expect $499 when specs have changed so much...  how many of us shell out $1000 on iPhones and to be able to run game decently on PCs once would easily spend more than $1000...

PS3 cost $850 to manufacture yet they had to sell it for $600.

Also since muh specs of PS5 are all custom ordered from AMD, like it has a APU containing the RDNA2 Graphics chip and Zen 2 CPU chip,  they can get it for much cheaper per unit price than us plebs see in the market.

Remember the contract to supply this CPU-GPU combo will last for 5-6 years minimum, so Sony has a lot of leeway in negotiating a better deal, meanwhile i'm not sure how much they are saving/losing on the custom SSD.

Also PC and Phone are multi purpose devices, not comparable to something that just plays games and maybe plays media if the manufacturers deign to provide us mortals with a software update.

The BOM for PS5 is actually $460, and that too is inflated because prices went up this year thanks to the pandemic. The markup on accessories is also insane like 2 to 3 times more.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind paying $699 for next-gen consoles. It's just that you're comparing apples to oranges. All those devices listed above have different use cases, business/pricing models.

Exactly, in my college Kinect is widely used from Psychology to Biotech to AI and a few companies I have interned in also use it.

It might have been a flop from a consumer gaming point of view but it's definitely a success in research environment.

I feel the Xbox is going to priced at least a 100$ lower than the PS5 off the rack.

MS will use the 'performance/dollar" ratio to kick start their sales, hope they can back it up with their games.

PS5 is already gonna have a decently sized (albeit old) library of PS4 exclusives to play.

Actually, not too high IMO.

It will sell 7-8m units in first year, so assuming Sony has spent 250 million on RnD, marketing, distribution, that’s 30-35$ per unit.
Total cost will be still below 500$.

PS4 launch BOM was almost close to 400 and they released it for 399 taking a small hit at launch. So if the 460 mark is accurate no way it's going over 499 at launch and I would not even be surprised if it's launched at 449.

Correct. 449$ is my guess too.

Btw has Sony pulled out from China or not,  that will inflate a cost a bit but it wouldn’t take them to setup their assembly line in Japan. They know this stuff unlike MS, which is going to have hard time in mass assembly.

99% they're not doing half step, its either going to be $399 or $499. Even the difference between DE and disk version would be $100 at least.
