If it's anything like the touch-pad bullsh*t on the PS4, then it would be a sorry excuse to not make it cross compatible. I can understand a feature like motion control (SIX AXIS) which can make a past generation controller that did not support the feature to be incompatible with the current set of games that do require it; that would make sense. But essentially, a lot of the functions are pretty much preset and can be done with the existing button scheme. I guess the focus this gen is on Haptics and Adaptive Triggers. They will tell that the "experience" of using a DS4 in a mission designed to use DS5 Adaptive Triggers/Haptics is NOT the same. While most don't care about them, this way, developers always spend some time to enhance this experience. It would be like saying, i don't care about vibration in joysticks when i shoot people so they should allow me to use an old joystick with no vibration. Hit or flop, we will know later on when we start experiencing them.

The Dual sense has some new features which they want the games to use, and if they make DS4 compatible that means developers will either ignore these features or make them half baked to support DS4. Just because microsoft sh*t the bed with cross gen doesn't mean sony should too. It's not about that. My little brother is used to DS4 and loves it, has small hands so I think Dualsense will be a bit heavier for him. I mean why not let it be used as the secondary controller?? But I do agree with the developer part. They are lazy Af

Even 360 controller didn't work with Xbone. Just because microsoft sh*t the bed with crossgen, doesn't mean Sony will drop their approach of true next gen too. I didn't even expect sony to allow DS4 to work on PS5 even for BC games.

Why is this even an issue? A new generation of console comes once in 7-8 years and having a new controller is a no brainer. I understand people playing 2p games wanting their old controllers to work to cut expenses but maybe st of these consoles are sold at subsidized prices and selling extra controllers & games ( now subs) are the only way they would break even with every unit sold. Anyways the dual shock 2-5 ( dual sense) has added massive features and improvements unlike the other controller which Just got some minor revisions in the last 2 decades. Also....

I'm fine with the ergonomics changes made to enhance the experience. It's definitely not a feature that everyone would use, but some might prefer playing it that way. For instance, when controller rumble was first introduced, I was very excited to try this feature, but the PSone controller's rumble was so aggressive that my palms began to ache after a few continuous sessions. Since then I have never used that feature, EVER, in any of my consoles and/or PC's controller. Similarly, the SIX AXIS feature, while very intriguing at start, was limited to very few games. I remember Heavy Rain being so cumbersome to control in the beginning, but eventually it was fine. Now that I've played it on PC, I feel that the analog configuration was more than sufficient to handle the control scheme efficiently, without the need to wiggle the controller around. All of these experiences can be a hit or miss, but if the basic functionality of the controller is supported by every game, then there is really no reason why the PS4 controller shouldn't be allowed to play next generation games. I mean I would gladly play with the PS3 controller on the PS4, if they allowed it. I don't have the need for the touch-pad and eventually got used to the PS3 triggers too. Hell, the battery life was better than the PS4 controller. 34 minutes ago, Big Boss said: But this has always been the case. PS2 controller never worked with PS3, PS3 never worked with PS4 and so on. I don't understand why you constantly keep saying "Microsoft sh*t the bed", in what context are you saying this? Their cross gen support for accessories? if yes, then I think you got the wrong phrase. Microsoft has broken the usual trend. I have 2 Xbox one controllers right now and if I buy a Series X and these controllers are natively compatible, then pray tell, how on earth is that a bad thing? It's an option that Microsoft has provided and a dam good one. The rate at which current controllers are selling, I don't want to shell out 5K for a next generation controller, if the current generation controller can handle the games appropriately with ease. CarbonCore
The only thing MS added to its controller is the share button from last gen. Its not that difficult for them to be "consumer friendly" when they spend $5 on controller R&D. Maybe there'll be adapters that let you use DS4 like how Nintendo lets you use GC pad with Smash. I actually did not expect my arcade stick, wheel and camera to work going forward, but good to know they're not dropped hard like Kinect. Try playing Ghost of Tshushima on PS4 without touch pad and vibration. The traveler's attire will become completely useless without vibration. And there are many such games. If you keep disabling vibration or rumble, then you really are not experiencing games properly. Forza horizon without rumble isn't as fun as with rumble. Similarly playing PS4 games without share button means you are sacrificing a major part of current gen if you stick to the ds3. You won't even be able to play PSVR games. The controllers come as a package with console generation. Just because microsoft doesn't give a f**k about innovation or progress then that doesn't mean other companies too. There are exclusive games that use controller features properly. Sometimes I feel the majority started gaming with PS4 Xbone. This is such a f**king non issue. It is always expected with every Console gen, only exception was Wii I think. Welcome to console gaming I guess. VelivolusDas
I think it's too soon to determine whether Sony's decision was valid or not. If the games support the DualSense features to the core and the games are just not the same without it, it's totally understandable for them to not have the DS4 work with PS5 games. But, if the 'updates' to the DualSense are not that massive and are mostly forgotten (I highly doubt that will happen) after a year or so, it would be good if players have the option to use their DS4 with PS5 games. I mean, just think about it, the last game I've played (TLoU2) could've easily been played with the DS3 without hampering the core experience of the game one bit (after all TLoU1 was a PS3 game originally). So, I think it would be nice to have an option to play it with the DS3 if anyone wants to (I know the DS3 was a sh*t controller overall and nobody in their right mind would choose to play with that over the DS4, but you get the point). I think there are literally (absolutely literally) a handful of games that utilise the touchpad and lightbar so well that the game couldn't be played with a previous-gen controller. Honestly, it might even be fewer than a handful. Yes, MS have not added new features to the Series X controller, so they allow the Xbox One controller to work with it. What's the harm in that? It works for them. Some people invest heavily in Elite Controllers and whatnot and it's good to be able to use the same controllers for newer games without having to invest in it all over again. silentassassin
Whats this whole fuss about ? Makes no sense to me. When was controllers ever compatible with next gen ? Y would you go back and use old controllers with less features over new controllers ? I can understand backward compatibility for games, but for controllers i dont get it. They have made big advances in audio tech and don't wanna go that to go waste just to support old controller. Makes no sense. 3D audio directly through controller is such a big step forwards, yet very few people actually talk about it. This is why audio on consoles is stuck three generations behind. Most games use exact same audio codec and surround setup used on OG Xbox.

Just because microsoft doesn't give a f**k about innovation or progress then that doesn't mean other companies too. There are exclusive games that use controller features properly. I gave a valid explanation of why I chose to disable vibration altogether; it's not a feature that is beneficial for me. I have perfectly enjoyed every game without it being present. I never said it's useless, but it's just not for me. So you can understand that like me, there would many that wold probably be on the same side and rest would always have it on; it's a choice. I haven't played Ghost of Tshushima, so I can't comment on how important or integral that attire is to the game, but I'm assuming it's a minor aspect of the game that utilizes said touch-pad/vibration feature, as do those many other games. Barely used 'Share' button and no interest in VR, so yeah, not a deal breaker there. Hence, the point here is that an optional (good) choice being provided by a company and people still want to berate it. If the phrase "sh*t their bed" was to be used aptly, it would be for their screw up with the "always on internet connection to play on Xbox one" or that "used games are not allowed" as that was preventing a major part of the user experience that is tied to offline or just simple game sharing. That got a lot of heat and it was justified, which they also corrected by the way. But accessory backward compatibility, don't see how we're still complaining about this support and that it's stopping innovation and progress? Each of their controllers have seen Elite versions in 360 and One era. They created an adaptive controller to aid the disabled gamers. Their features have also expanded into the PC space seamlessly. You can have progress and innovation while still retaining certain elements from the past. Microsoft may have f*cked up at times, but so has Sony. Every company does somewhere. A major part of progress should also shows how a company that f*cked has recovered from said f*ck up and regained consumer trust.

And tbh the Dolby Atmos (rs 574 something for life time) or the Windows Sonic (free) are great for emulating 3D audio. They support all type of headphones. The better the headphone quality, the better the sound effect. The games that support Dolby Atmos like Forza Horizon, Gears 5 sound way better. You can actually feel you are inside the game due to the spatial audio and crisp sound. In non Dolby Atmos games too they emulate the audio and it's definitely better than normal audio. I think this is what sony is going for in PS5, just marketed better and maybe at better fidelity.
