The Xbox Series X|S thread

That is exactly what I mean. They will develop a game that runs fine on Series S and add some extra settings/fps for Series X. They can never make a game that will completely 100% use the full capability of the Series X, and at the same time whose very minimum requirements will be far beyond what the Series S is capable of. That's the Lowest Common Denominator.

my point is, why would they do that ? they can as well target series x and disable some of the features for series s.  I mean, this is being done for PC since ages, there's a huge gap in the recommended vs min requirements for many games.  And you enable/disable features on the fly depending on your PC configuration.  Here, instead of you, the game engine does the job of enabling/disabling the features depending on the target console where its being run.

They can do that - if they don't care about performance on the Series S. Thing is, in PC - dev really does not care about your performance much. All the horrible ports that many times do not even perform well if you are at recommended specs attest to that. There is no central controlling authority on PC. It does not fly on consoles. Devs will have to submit the game to MS for certification first, before release. And if the frames are tanking hard on Series S - you can bet they are not getting that certification. Same for absolute major and innovative features (Like the Nemesis System I mentioned). Since Series S and X are part of the same gen - they will both have it or not at all. MS will not certify the game otherwise. With no MS Approval - no release on Xbox. If MS mandates 25-30 fps average, it will have to be that at the minimum. If MS mandates parity (Other than resolution and some advanced Graphics Features), it will have to have that as well.

Hence in consoles, devs develop the game for the weakest machine first (Series S in this case) and work their way up, instead of the other way around.

It's also the reason why you see stuff like Ghost of Tsushima on base PS4. Devs are using the maximum potential of base PS4, because they don't have to worry about any lower specs. But at the same time - it is holding back PS4 Pro. If there was no base PS4 and PS4 Pro was the minimum, you could have seen something far better, as the minimum standard would have been raised.

I don't think that will be an issue. XSS has 4TF of next gen architecture. 1TF in next gen architecture performs way better than 1TF of last gen. It means that XSS may be as powerful as X1X which is a 4K 30fps machine.

XSS has the nearly the same CPU as XSX/PS5 and same type of SSD. XSS has to handle 1080p 30fps with parity with XSX which may be targeting 4K 60 fps for 3rd party games with next gen graphics features like RTX etc.

With this in mind, XSS won't be the weak link/lowest common denominator as it has sufficient hardware to reach its target perf.

why would I be concerned about you specifically :scratchchin:

Initially I wanted X1X to play RDR 2 because its blurry on Pro due to bad checkerboarding. X1X is costing ~35-37K which is too much for a discontinued console. People bought it for ~28K last year. Everyone said it would be better to try buying XSX. I also got 3 years of Gamepass ultimate. I just wanted to buy a 4K Xbox to play my last gen games backlog - AAA 3rd party titles. Also, I am sick of Playstation as I have played on 3 PS consoles over 10 years and needed to experience Xbox.

So XSX makes a lot of sense for my requirements right now.

But this is the first time that a console has been launched with 2 different variants , and one console is priced lower and even advertised as having inferior hardware.  I don't think MS is gonna mandate everyone to make it appear the same on both consoles.  It's just that the devs might lose out on a significant market share if they don't release a port on XSS.  But all that aside, it still is not clear as to why certain visually demanding features can't be just suppressed on series s to ensure it runs at a playable framerate.  Even without suppressing the features, the reduction in resolution from 4k->1440p itself should help in giving a good performance on XSS. I think the reduction in hardware specs for XSS is mainly considering that the games would not be targeting 4k and hence reduced h/w specs in enough.  I don't think it would require any other sort of compromise in gameplay design etc is needed on part of the game dev.  But of couse, I'm not a game dev, so I can't be sure of that.

You made an excellent decision accordingly to your needs

don’t let these stupid console wars make you justify your decision

You are going to have a ball for next 3 years on GamesPass

Thanks!

All my life I played as a lone wolf because none of my school/college friends and neighbors had a console or played with the same passion. I am glad that I joined IVG - I can finally discuss gaming to my heart's content with like-minded people.

XSX briefly went on sale on Amazon. Didn't manage to get an order in, but this was the stock update.

How come the ones who ordered between 10-13 nov are getting pushed to Jan 2021, whereas they are claiming new orders now will be in stock on 5 Dec 2020? My own order dated 13 Nov is estimated to be delivered by 4 Jan 2021:scratchchin:

Why did you buy GP before the console?

FK was around 30-40 seconds. Amazon was upto a minute. You need to have everything ready. Logged in, card saved, address saved, be in full signal part of your house for OTP. Not spend more than 2-3 seconds on each step.

Spoiler

damn, now that I am saying it all out loud, its making me sound like a maniac :fear1:

Ok Thanks for the heads up guyz. Added distill to Firefox.  And added FK & AZ for a interval of 5 secs. Lets see.

Suppose that Out of Stock changes to Stock, How will i come to know ?  Via pop up in the browser or the email or mobile ? I have not configured mobile anywhere.

Free version of distill sends email after you sign up.. i think 30mails are free ...

When using distill, select only the part of the page that shows that it’s out of stock otherwise you will keep getting mails for every minor change to the page..

edit — you also get popup when there is a change
