Probably a very unpopular opinion, and hope I'm wrong as I play more but:

I completed Gears of war UE and also played a bit of halo reach. Both games seemed so uninspired/boring to me. Halo doesnt seem to evoke much feeling at all. Gears is a bit better. But both are a by-the-numbers kind of shooters. Pretty much same thing over and over without much of a "progression". Wasnt even inclined to finish gears but did somehow.

Will play a newer version of gears and much more of halo and then see if the above opinion still holds.

You should also consider that Gears 1 came out in 2006 and was legendary at that time. We are playing a 2006 game in 2021. The cover system and game mechanics were sublime when it came out. Just listen to this review from that time -

Also, play on Hardcore or Insane difficulty level to really get into the meat of the game.

Gears 1 feels very dated now. But back when it launched there was nothing out there like it on any console.

Berserker fight was so good.

halo is a different game from a different generation (even I found halo 4's colorful terrains / villains quite offputting now, but remember having no issues playing these games on x360 when they launched).  Also, halo is best experienced on higher difficulties, its really amusing to see all those colorful enemies hiding behind covers / flanking / dodging and what not , the AI really shines through on higher difficulties !

Gears is more accessible.  Ignore the first 3, since they are quite old by now, and see if you can start from gears 4 onwards, i played it recently, and it holds well with amazing set pieces and stuff.  But yeah , while the story is kinda better than games like doom & quake, they are not your typical uncharted/horizon kinda games , story is more of a reason to shoot aliens/monsters and the games keeps throwing more & more of them at you.  I found Gears to have better set pieces and a better / more involved story compared to other games of this genre though.

Gears 5 saw biggest change in gameplay since Gears 1 with addition of Jack abilities and supers. Core moment  to moment gameplay is still Gears, just more refined and fluid but addition of Jack abilities adds extra depth to the gameplay. You can use stealth and clear entire area full of enemies without  firing  a bullet or one shot big enemies after maxing out Jack abilities which was not possible in any old Gears games but sadly many people didn't like the game thanks to those open world areas.

For me Gears 5 is my favourite Gears after 2 and 3. I didn't like 4 much. Multiplayer and Horde mode is easily the best in series in Gears 5. Replaying Gears 5 on New game plus with maxed Jack abilities makes gameplay lot of fun.

Halo didnt even have a full fledge sprint feature until Halo 4 in 2012

you can say thanks to dumb fans who didn’t want the experience to improvise with time

It's one thing to have played those games at launch vs commenting on them after 10 years. Sprint was introduced in 2010 with Halo Reach. Before that Halo (1, 2, 3) didn't have sprint and Halo was also at the peak of multiplayer shooters. It's decline started with Reach. Sprint in Reach and Halo 4 was absolute sh*t as it broke a lot of core mechanics and maps. 343 did a great job with Halo 5 and personally, I don't mind sprint now. My favorite MP games to play are Halo 3 and Halo 5.

On a separate note, drawing comparisons among different genres of FPS is just an absolute waste of time. Here's an FYI, sprint doesn't make a game modern. Halo is an arena shooter (sub-genre of FPS) like Quake, Unreal Tournament and Doom albeit with a slower movement speed (with the exception of some multiplayer modes). The reason Halo isn't as popular now isn't because of the f**k ups of Reach and Halo 4 but because of the same reason why Quake and Unreal Tournament aren't. Classic arena shooters have been overtaken and aren't as popular as the likes of CoDs and Battle Royals. Despite that, Halo has it's own niche audience and still manages to have a decent presence online and a pro scene.

Eneloop white one’s on sale for 850 rs on Amazon... what’s the Normal price for these?

I got it within 800 locally and cancelled the online version, even the charger was cheaper locally.

I actually finished both Halo CE and Halo 2 campaigns last year again and i enjoyed both of them. It wasn't nostalgia either as i didn't really remember anything from my past playthroughs.

Standard or Anniversary editions?

Yes the first game to have it in a “full fledged way” as I said

Reach had it but it was part of an equipment

unless you had it equipped you wouldn’t be able to sprint

Also I played all Halo games on 360

not before that & not after that

But it was quite evident why Bungie wanted to redeem themselves from stupidity that was Halo fanbase

Now 343i is sailing in same boat

I am playing all of these back to back and it did not occur to me that there is a separate button for sprint in H4.

Which one is it? LS?

Ah! Halo 2 Anniversary is especially good. Actually, it's more closer to the classic art style.

Oh absolutely! H3 still has a good player base (MCC). I do play it from time to time. Thanks to MCC, new players keep coming in and it's great fun to wreck them. The competitive playlists though are still very tough. Lemme know if you feel like playing a match or two sometime. :)

I don’t remember what was the default

but I almost immediately changed it to Left Stick button if it wasn’t

I was playing all sorts of Shooters back then on across both consoles

so I set the standard controls for all games

CoD,Killzone,Resistance,Uncharted,Gears,Halo,BattleField,TLOU,GTAO,Titanfall,Destiny,Rainbow Six

You name any popular shooter of that Era & I was playing it (2006-2016)

That’s why it was more evident to me as to what developer is holding itself back for what reasons

But the Master Chief didn't require the puny Sprint button in older games coz he was always sprinting. :dog:

Damn I have to look into the sprinting thing now and I am almost done with the game.
