GeraltOfRivia
P4 and P3 remakes in P5 engine would have been better, but easily accessible hi-res ports aren't bad either.

roun90
Excellent! I love Persona 4 Golden. Comes under the list of "My Most Favorite Games Of All Time". But for all folks coming here from Persona 5, or even thinking of starting from Persona 4 Golden - please note that Atlus is not Ubisoft. They don't repackage the same game with a new number, but actually make huge improvements from one game to the next. For example, Persona 4 was a huge improvement over Persona 3. Persona 4 Golden was a huge improvement over Persona 4. Persona 5 was a huge improvement over Persona 4 Golden. Royal was a huge improvement over base Persona 5 etc. So by going back to Golden (Or even starting from Golden), you are actually going back by at least 1-2 substantial improvement cycles. For new players, you might even wonder what the hype of Persona is all about if you start from here (It was tremendous back in 2009-2011, better things gameplay-wise are available now). From the top of my head, these are all the ways in which you will go back (dis-improve), if you go from P5 to P4G - 1) Main Story Dungeons are randomly generated and are like Mementos, just without the vehicles. Along with worse graphics ofc. The only thing pre-determined about these dungeons are the number of floors 2) Unlike in Persona 5, you don't fight Personas in this game at all (Like say you fought Pixie, Nekomata etc.) . You fight the actual shadows. And these Shadows. And these Shadows are nothing but Black Blobs that change shape per dungeon. (If you remember P5 successful negotiation dialogue - "I'm not a Shadow; I'm a Persona from the River of Souls - That's actually true story-wise) 3) There are no negotiations. You obtain items/Personas/Money by playing a rotating card game at the end of the battle (You've seen this game many times, - card will be shown, then covered and spin - you have to select the card you want, basically keep your eye on the card you want) 4) There is no Baton Pass in Battles. So no switching characters mid-battle for exploiting weaknesses 5) There are no Guns in Battle. There are only physical attacks and Personas 6) There are no Confidants in the game. This is replaced by Social Links. While they may sound similar, there are differences story and gameplay-wise. Confidants are people helping each other and working for mutual benefit (Like say Joker helps all his confidants from their troubles, right from doing jobs for them, counselling them to sometimes going to Mementos to help them for his own benefits). This reflects in gameplay. Like improving Confidants gives specific gameplay improvements (Like the fortune telling from fortune confidant, getting cheap curative items from death arcana, getting more free time from temperance arcana, Getting more money from battles and better negotiations from Sun Arcana. etc. Social Links are more like getting to know the people in town. They don't give any gameplay improvement other than making the fusions of that arcana stronger and unlocking the ultimate Persona of that Arcana at Level 10 (Something that also happens in Persona 5). Party members and Hermit Arcana, who are both directly involved in dungeons though, do get benefits of Social Link Improvements 7) The areas you can explore is very limited in the game. Inaba - the village that Persona 4/Golden happens in is much smaller than Persona 5's Tokyo. 8) If you are planning on maxing all Social Links, time for that is very limited and you have to play in a very specific play-style. You will need walkthroughs for this. Unlike P5, the no. of days is less + there are no Fortune Tellings or Temperance Free Time's to help you increase Confidant Levels. 9) There are very limited mini-games. Off the top of my head, I can only remember fishing (Unlike Fishing, Baseball, Darts, Video Games, Cards etc.). That said there are plenty of non mini-games like going to theater/beach/hot springs/school clubs/going to cafe/costume shop etc. Plenty of activities, but still less than Persona 5. 7) Unlike Persona 5, you also cannot cook (So no making coffee or curry). Most of your SP restoring items is going to come from shops vending machines/treasure chests (Some from fishing as well). The Hermit Arcana will also heal you if you can find it in dungeons (But this is quite expensive). 8) In this game also, it's recommended to finish dungeons in 1 day, as the Social aspect deadlines are far stricter here than in P5. 9) The Social Link stories are actually far worse here than in Persona 5. Persona 5 Confidant stories actually were more meaningful than the Persona 4 Golden ones. That said, Social Links do affect the ending in P4G as well. 10) Ambushing enemies is very difficult in P4. There is no such thing as jumping on top of them from a distance like in P5. In P4G you have to poke them with your weapon from behind, but enemies can detect you pretty easily, especially if you are of a lower level. 11) Villains are worse here. There is only 1 villain unlike the multiple ones we had in P5. But you won't know who it is till the end. Now some of the positives - 1) Story is absolutely excellent. It's well worth it. 2) Music is god-like. You can't compare it with P5 as both are different genres (P4G - Pop, P5 - Acid Jazz). But it's amazing here as well. For example, this is the P4G Battle Theme (Time To Make History) 3) Characters are absolutely lovable. Atlus quality is still very much thre. You will love the characters, and at the end of it, you will feel sad that you will be leaving them (Much like parting ways with friends when you are moving away). That's the kind of characterization Atlus has made. I felt that way, and not just me, almost ever person who played P4G felt that way. 4) There is still a lot to do and you will have fun 5) Golden version also adds a ton of extras like the older concerts (2008 concerts) just like Royal did (Royal has the newer concerts 2013-present ones). These are actual real life concerts that happened in Japan. 6) Golden also has some fun things like accessing the full OST, playing a quiz game etc. which can be done outside the game. Both the concert and out of game OST, entertainment etc. can only be accessed after you complete the game I think 7) There is a fun costume shop in Golden and you can have fun over there. Unlocking the costumes and playing with them is fun by itself. 4) When you are about to reach the end of P4G, it will feel like the end of an era of life. Everything, including the Writing, Music, Characterization, Gameplay, all will make you feel that way. CarbonCore
P4 was such a downgrade going from P3 FES that even though Golden fixed some of the issues it will forever live in the shadow of FES. It also has the least likable cast of them all. Its claim to fame was being the only good game on a dead platform This is why when people talk about 4th Persona game, they always talk about Golden and not P4. Its a forgettable game that was sort of patched up by Golden. Lets not bring in P5 here, that's on a whole another planet.

Make no mistake, it is an excellent game. You will find plenty of things to like in P4G and you will grow to love it if you give it a chance. Just like everyone does. It's just that Atlus has a habit of massively improving on each subsequent release that it leaves the older games in the dust. Just like a good developer should. Anyway, try it if you can. With regional pricing, I expect the game to cost Rs 499 or Rs 999 at most. And the game is more than worth it for that price. @CarbonCore Are you sure about that, or is it nostalgia talking? Have you forgotten the numerous problems P3 FES/Portable had? The 200 floor dungeon - which was the only dungeon. The "Tired" mechanic, that severely limited how much you could play and explore. No way to control your party members other than give broad directives (Especially Mitsuru and her Marin Karin problem - remember that?). Town that was frankly not that interesting and had very limited things to do. And the very rigid Social Links that ensured you were railroaded into playing in a certain way, as prescribed by walkthroughs or you will be penalized (Negative Social Links, or even unable to start a Social link for example). And while Portable tried to improve upon the battle system, it brought it's own set of problems. The town and map itself was completely gone. There was no exploration and you were stuck going to places by selecting them from a menu - like a visual novel. 50% of the story (Content of the Answer) was missing. It improved the battle system and gave Female MC, but at the great cost of almost completely stripping down the game itself. As far as story is concerned, P3's story felt to me like an edgy teenage story trying to be needlessly "Cool". Shooting yourself in the head to summon a Persona, almost all characters almost always completely depressed or having huge problems with bad endings etc. Worse, the camraderie between the team itself was missing. P4 was far better. It had a more light-hearted story, true. But the characters felt more real, and it was kinda like playing with friends. Gameplay was also far more improved from P3, just by the fact that the battle system gave you full control, the map was far more fun and had things to do. Story was actually pretty chill good, without all that pretentious "Edgy" stuff that 13 YOs seem to love. And you actually cared about the characters. And P4G, of course took P4 and hit it out of the park. There was no need to talk about P4 anymore because P4G had improved it by a 1000%. Massive story expansions, SL expansions, gameplay improvements, brand new things to do, stunning new music etc. plus no demerit over base P4 (Like what Portable had over P3/FES). Why would anyone even talk about base P4 anymore? P5 though was a massive improvement over P4G and P5R over P5 (Other than the party camraderie - that's where P4 and P5 can compete). So really, there's no need to talk about P5.
