radicaldude
I wonder what has changed since 2019 or Ubilol just likes to live dangerously https://www.polygon.com/2019/6/24/18683652/single-player-games-as-service-fortnite-anthem-apex Btw riders republic is another open multiplayer (maybe live service) ubilol game. Guest
Genshin is 90% single player. Actually 100% you can play solo as co-op is fully optional. The end game abyss is fully solo and game has no PvP or forced co-op. The live service part is purely for game updates/banners/progression. I highly doubt any game (mainly Ubisoft) will update like Genshin does. Every 6 weeks major update. New chars, new weapons, new events, so much to do. Ubisoft couldn't even keep Division/Crew/Far Honor/Steep etc alive and now they are going to turn AC into live service. ?

Guest
Official - An Update on Assassin’s Creed Infinity and the Future of the Assassin’s Creed Franchise Quote Along with our announcement of new content coming for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, we wanted to share some key updates on the talented and creative minds that will now be working in a collaborative, cross-studio structure between Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec that will guide, grow, evolve, and define the overall future of Assassin’s Creed that includes an important upcoming, early-in-development project codenamed Assassin’s Creed Infinity. Quote This change means we’re also evolving along with the video game industry. The pandemic and working from home have fundamentally changed the way we produce games, giving us a moment to reflect on our organization. Assassin’s Creed was born within the walls of Ubisoft Montreal and the studio built an incredible foundation for the franchise with the immense skill and creativity of its teams before Ubisoft Quebec then took the lead with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Odyssey, demonstrating its ability to drive the franchise even further. dylanjosh
I kind of like episodic games tbh. But I guess it doesn't work financially, since IO and Don't Nod both abondoned it and Telltale shut down.

Not super common and live service/always online games have been around since 90-00s. MMOs were huge back then. It's a shame everyone is chasing the old trend without realizing what made them great. radicaldude
Some annual titles like fifa should be live service. Too much emphasis on live service might kill sp aaa type titles. In 2000s there were only a handful of live service type games. Now everyone wants a piece of the pie
TRMNTR
Never understood the idea of "this will kill this". Isn't it basic supply and demand? If people really don't care about live service games, then why are these companies going towards it? If they're such a bad thing, wouldn't people stop investing in them and kill them anyways? It's like saying, "I don't like Battle Royale so f**k everyone for adopting it." Companies go where the money is and money is where the current trend is. In any case lemmings love and pour money into these live service multiplayer only games. That is if they click. Not every game can be dota2/warframe/cod warzone etc etc etc. SP AAA games are very expensive to develop and don't make all that much compared to some battle royale fps cartoon game which *becomes a hit*. radicaldude
Single player AAA titles would never go out of fashion. Im sure if a survey is done, a majority of gamers would still prefer stand alone story based aaa single player titles. That's the reason Nintendo games still sell in millions. Episodic/mtx based/ live service games are generally top down approach taken by the Devs I believe, mostly to lock someone in a particular service / ecosystem for a long time. Great strategy for cash grabs, but dilutes gaming in general. Just imagine if sony turns God of war into a live service title. Ps- if you stretch something too long, it breaks eventually. Same is with games. Some genre might be better in live services scenarios though, like PvP type games. Biggest example of this is epic games. I am sure many people dont even know about the various epic franchises that they have launched in the past. Unreal is one of them. They have stopped investing in single player games and their major focus is now fortnite and apple se pange lena.
radicaldude
Live service type games are best for streaming purposes as well. This is also one reason why we are seeing such games mushrooming up these days. I guess many prefer watching someone else play games (inside a bath tub) than experiencing those games themselves. Zoomers only know Ebin games because Fortnite and all. Things is Pubs are of the PoV that Live Service == instant money spinner, it's not always the case. The worst is making an existing franchise some kind of live service multiplayer meme game.
