Returnal

For the ones who think this game needs some kind of save mode or devs hasn't been kind to casual players and doing some kind of 'torture' to those players

All you need is to get good. I'm also trying to become one.

Not comparing with these OP speedrunners but what this game will actually be if developers gave up on their already build structure. It's a gem of a game in it's current state.

Its not git good or game being unfair, each run taking 3 hours to complete without anyway to mid-run save system is the issue (rest mode doesnt count). Cant expect everyone to keep playing for 2-3 hours on a stretch in a game which by design is made to completed multiple times.

Look it's not a question of difficulty or "Git Gud". It's simply a question of time.

Let me give you an example. You have free time of 1 hour. You play Returnal. Your progress is going really good. You downed 1-2 bosses. But then your 1 hr time is up. You have work to do after that, which cannot be avoided. Your choices are -

1) Put the game in rest mode, but you're afraid because it can brick the system

2) Quit the game and start all the way from the beginning.

Same for if you think you have tons of free time, but then sudden IRL commitments pop up.

Tell me - is this a problem of "Git Gud" or an artificial problem introduced just to pad out time or as you say it "Torture Players"?

This is not good design in any way, shape or form. If the devs have to resort to this kind of artificial progression stoppage, just to pad out time, then the actual game time is very low indeed.

Hence why a Save and Quit is needed. Note that Save and Quit is different from simply saving progress and continuing on.

Pretty much.

And this is not even taking into account that the game apparently crashes quite a bit too. There are reports of people losing 2+ hrs of progress because of crashes

I guess people just need to git gud and stop the game from crashing through sheer willpower.

Yes I get your concern is time.

If you have an hour of free time you DON'T play a game like Returnal. Period.

Reviewers have already specified that this is not a regular game we usually play, this is something different from those monotonous genres.

Start from the beginning when you die/quit is subjective, as I've played you don't really have to complete everything when you die or quit. You choose to skip to go directly to the level where you left. Just not at that specific position. Keep this in mind.

If you've defeated 1-2 bosses in an hour of gameplay (WTF :O) and opened the third biome (area/map) then you can go there after say 15 to 20 mins of playime (less if you've become good at it) Hence, get good comes to the picture.

Then you can just leave it paused or go to rest mode.

I think the brick problem has been resolved.

I certainly don't agree with this. You just look at the reviews. All reviewers/users are praising this game. Even other game developers are. Insomniac, devolver digital, square enix, yako taro etc.

It's all matter of perspective. You'll feel an open world game or a GAAS game good as they give bigger maps and saves but in general you do the same thing in different areas. Here you're spawned at the beginning but procedurally generated areas makes up for it.

Time was an issue for me too when @CarbonCore asked me to stream this game. But little I knew the game just grabs you. Things have also changed because of this second wave pandemic I can give much more time to gaming. There have been spectators of my screenshare @Aloy and @Assassins Creed. Now I can stream properly.

Yeah but like Hades was/is the best example for this genre of game before returnal and in that too, the game saves your state. I don’t think a simple save is such a huge issue and definitely not associated to skill.

I got this over the weekend, quiet liked the shooting and sound design, but it gets very repetitive after a few deaths as you run towards the next biome or lose your progression of two hours.
As there is a lack of progression, I can see the game becoming something you play for a while, pick up for a session and then eventually just drop out of your game rotation. As for difficulty, I’m about to plat Sekiro, so it isn’t that. If it’s worth it, I can put the effort in. But there just isn’t that much variety to the world and at 5k, I’m not sure it’s worth it.
