The Coronavirus Thread Part 2

Government is shameless man. We are lucky that court arguments are reported now. In Bombay High court, the pune municipal corporation told that there are sufficient icu and oxygen beds. Judge asked petitioner to call helpline and keep it on speaker, both time the helpline told them beds are not available.

AstraZeneca vaccine has a very very low immune response on the new variant

& like only 50-60% protection against severe disease

Maybe more against death

but it’s not a hidden fact right now that one can!! get critical even after fully vaccinated

Everything about CoVaxin is a hidden fact

so no one knows

Source?

I thought all cops were vaccinated first though (frontline workers?)

Yes that's what I thought. Response was decent in Maharashtra for front line workers vaccination.

This is f**king stupid. Why would you wait for HC intervention in the first place? This right here is the problem in the country. Every thing is a bloody ketchup bottle.

15 died last night in GMC due to oxygen fluctuation apparently.

Can you please cite the source which states 50-60% metric?

Also none of the vaccines boast a 100% efficacy rate (this metric is different than the 50-60% metric you mentioned), in a large enough population such cases will come up.

Even Israel didn't have 100% effectiveness.

I think you have mixed up some of the numbers being reported.

Actually this study was criticized a little and now termed as outdated because the dosing interval was capped at 35 days which now has been revised to 12 weeks.

Also, the motive of the study was to evaluate whether the efficacy of the vaccine was atleast 60% or not, the efficacy against the South African variant was a secondary objective, so instead of testing specifically against the variant, they compared it to the numbers of the original study to compute the variant's efficacy numbers which obviously is not the correct procedure.

And they do mention the same in the article, just takes a little more effort to read through the meat of the discussion instead of the conclusion:

"Of 87 spike-specific antigens identified by the sequencing, 75 remained unaffected by the B.1.351 mutations"

"The lack of efficacy against the B.1.351 variant should be considered in the context of the 75% efficacy (95% CI, 8.7 to 95.5) in preventing mild-to-moderate Covid-19 with onset at least 14 days after even a single dose of ChAdOx1 nCov-19 vaccine that was observed before the B.1.351 variant emerged in South Africa"

"the trial findings are inconclusive with respect to whether the ChAdOx1 nCov-19 vaccine may protect against severe Covid-19 caused by infection with the B.1.351 variant."

"Can't test the increased T-cell immunity"

But most importantly the study mentions:

""there were no cases of severe disease or hospitalization in either group"

Also, it is now being regarded that the Indian variant is not as elusive at the SA variant and vaccines should offer considerable protection against it but obviously we need data to claim this.

But people will most likely need to get yearly shot nonetheless, be it another dose or a booster or a whole another vaccine.

We need to follow masks and social distancing for 2 years more at least, and not rely entirely on vaccines. At least those of us who can WFH. f**k festivals, parties, celebrations, gatherings for 2 years. It has to be a collective effort.

Quote

Dr Bhardwaj said his team tried all that was possible to save him and even considered a lung transplant: “We gave him whatever was needed. We did everything possible… It’s a huge loss. So many doctors and healthcare staff are falling sick, even after being vaccinated, but they are recovering after having mild symptoms. This is the first death at present of a doctor who was fully vaccinated.”

Vaccinated is still better than not vaccinated.

4-6 weeks gap between 2 doses was never sufficient. With 12 weeks we have clinical data to back it up. Hopefully now it will work.

There are going to be edge cases obviously. It's not a 100% perfect vaccine.

Idk why such cases are used to give more weight to vaccine hesitancy. But I guess, news mein masala zaroori hai.

People are so quick to dismiss something.

I think these people should just not get the vaccine and let others have it.
