The Coronavirus Thread Part 2

Amid the surge in the cases, the state Health Department (West Bengal) has issued a new Covid treatment guideline, stating that hospitalization should be avoided as much as possible especially in the case of mild symptomatic patients.

The guideline recommends hospitalization for Covid-positive people with a body temperature of 102 degrees or more, recurrent fever for at least seven days and a low pulse rate.

“While the world is grappling with the highly infectious Omicron, strain of Covid, scientists in France have identified a potentially worrying new variant, which has 46 mutations.

Named IHU, the new B.1.640.2 variant has so far infected 12 people living in southeastern France. The first case was linked to a person with a travel history to Cameroon, western Africa, said researchers in a paper published on medRxiv.

However, experts were quick to announce that just because a new variant had been discovered, that did not necessarily mean IHU will prove as infectious as other strains, including Omicron.“

Hopefully this comes to nothing or else it seems we are going to be f**ked for forseeable future.

Statewise lockdowns are still a possibility if cases surge to 2lakhs + each day.

Its a question of when not if . Most other countries are reporting cases higher than 2x of their previous peak on a regular basis now . You can expect a similar pattern to emerge in India as well where we may also report more than 5L+ cases per day by February.

But even those countries haven't gone in a lockdown so I doubt India will take that step unless it becomes a absolute necessity .

Also state/central government cannot say that this variant is 'Mild' and then impose a complete lockdown. If they impose lockdown they will have to admit situation is serious which no government will do (for political reasons )

No denying we are headed for a very rough couple of months but then again I fully believe the government (both central and state) will carry on with this  COVID variant is 'Mild' narrative and we have made all preparations to deal with it and hence may not implement a complete lockdown.

The cost of a complete lockdown for state governments will be very high both financially and politically -  say if Delhi/Maharashtra government impose a full lockdown then the opposing parties will bury them alive .

A total of recorded 107 ppl have died in the entire world from Omicron as of today.

If lockdowns are put much more ppl will die in a single town/destrict than this number.

If you see the interview of Indian Epidemiologist & main advisor of the official panel.

He clearly said we won’t be fair with the ppl of the nation if we go into a lockdown with current situation being unfolded.

But yeah he also said we can’t predict this virus & need to be cautious & keep collecting more data.

Yeah lockdown may lead to more deaths than the virus itself .

And most governments are more worried about the burden on the healthcare system with severe staff shortages and rising hospitalization numbers due to crazy high numbers of cases .

India recorded 524 deaths yesterday. Total active cases in India are 2 lacs at present. Percentage wise very small but overall a high number .

I believe we are being peddled mild variant to calm us all down. As per WHO omicron is mild but Highly transmissible and today they have claimed that the more it spreads the more it will mutate.

Cant just make people go all out, right? A mini lockdown is highly required to stop transmission.

I'd like if there wasn't a lockdown. But f**k me if I don't feel like punching at least every other person for mask around the chin, mask below the nose, mask so loose you can fit a 747 in there, and the absolute scum with no mask at all.
