It's not even 6-8 months after initial vaccination and we are hitting new numbers in those countries. These crowds at hill stations, now kanwars everywhere, all feel similarly I guess, that the virus is gone for good. This is kumbh mela level fiasco all over again. It's just that the deaths are not getting reported, specially in tier 3 cities and villages. Other SEA countries are similarly placed to india with similar genetics. Not the best person to answer, but my guess would be that due to extremely high infectivity of the virus, a high number of people are getting infected (more than say, flu), leading to not only higher rates of mutations, but the "best" (those that can escape immune response) survival rates of those variants. Add to it the fact that if you look at the lab leak theory, the initial virus was already bioengineered to have extremely high infectivity. Have 75% of adult population in these cities finish vaxx in 2 weeks. 100-150 vaxx per center won't cut it, start mobile vaccination centers on the street corners and jab everyone who is passing through.
