Considering the progression of studios after being acquired by MS, it’s better they lock them into a contract rather than acquiring. It worked for games like Gears and Mass Effect.

Also Asobo hasn’t done anything major besides this to warrant making it a first party studio. It’s also a risk to buy the studio based on a game/genre that will be quite niche beyond the initial launch hype.

They already have a 10 year contract for this game ,not sure though .

Their progression is amazing. Movie tie in games > Plague Tale Innocence > Flight Simulator.

I think game studios just need one bug game to breakout if the leadership is any good. Starry eyed talented graduates are dying to join game devs so attracting talent is never a problem.

Rocksteady did f**k all before they made Arkham Asylum. CDPR was also a no name Eurojank dev before Witcher 3 afaik. Now they're one the biggest names in the industry.

CDPR made Witcher 1 and 2 which were fantastic games in their own right. Witcher 3 didn't come out of blue. Granted, those entries weren't as big commercially, but they were very good and in many ways, better than the 3rd part

WAIT what? The same studio that made Plague Tale made Flight Simulator?

what the *bleep* ? Those are so wildly different its amazing. It's like saying Naughty Dogs next game will be Fifa 22.

Yup. Asobo, spiders and bend are the studios to watch out for in the coming console generation.

I bet its harder to grab a Frenchie studio more than a Japani one because of their labor and acquisition laws. Vivendi tried it for years to grab Ubi and ultimately gave up.

Asobo will happily sign any lucrative contract that will help them stay afloat. They’ve been around a long time and aren’t done anything that’s become super successful.

I remember enjoying Fuel but it was a game well ahead of its time, and they didn’t do enough to appeal to the mainstream. Then they did a bunch of Kinect stuff.

Man Fuel was amazing. All those four letter games from 360 gen, Blur, Fuel, Pure, Grid, Dirt they were all great.

Article that goes in a little depth to talk about the tech used in the game :  https://www.protocol.com/microsoft-flight-simulator-2020

A quick excerpt :

Quote

The algorithms and data — including OpenStreetMap — were then fed into Microsoft's vast Azure computing cloud to generate Flight's 2.5-petabyte model, which includes 2 trillion trees, 1.5 billion buildings (you can probably find your house), 117 million lakes and just about every road, mountain, city and airport on the planet.  Azure is used not just to generate the data but also to deliver it to players. No personal computer could hold all that information, so Flight streams real-world geography, weather and air traffic information to users as they play. (There is also a less-detailed offline mode.)

This is kinda similar to what was talking about in the other thread as well, with the cloud far more things are possible in the coming generation of gaming, than with standalone gaming consoles.

So, this is the 'power of the cloud' thingy they were talking about back when the Xbox One launched! Cool.

Yeah, although it took a paltry 140 people studio from France to do what their own shitty studios couldn't do in 7 years.

Maybe it was not ready properly back then.  Its not like Asobo doing it without help from Azure team.

Crackdown was not from First party studios and no other game was using cloud or promoting cloud

BTW, Sony/PlayStation can also access this tech, right? At least in some form?

remember reading long time back, that sony/ms were exploring some deal regarding cloud gaming :  https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/20/18632374/microsoft-sony-cloud-gaming-partnership-amazon-google
