Makes sense. Plus the AVR can't do full 2.1 anyway, so probably a project for later ;)

Adding @Shantz too

Always had an itch for a receiver. Do they add input lag at all? That's my biggest ocd because of cod mp.

Otherwise the Bar9.1 might be a good upgrade from my LG 2.1 soundbar.

Nothing that I've noticed in the past 10 years of using receivers, but then I don't play any multiplayer so I'm very sure if there's any there. Coincidentally, there was a video on LTT yesterday on this, and they didn't find any input lag at all with a Sony receiver.

The quality will depend on the receiver you pick, but the sound you get out of a 5.1.2 setup (or higher) with 150+W per channel is really satisfying :D

And it's true directional surround if you set the cabling in your room up so you can place the rear channel speakers at the back of the room. Soundbars simulate, but it just isn't the same. Again, just make sure you look at a good model. And hold until there are some good HDMI 2.1 receivers available locally.

As long as you are not doing any processing, the video should be passthrough, so any additional lag should be minimal (low single digits probably).

Node that this may vary from model to model, and especially soundbars may cut corners compared to proper receivers.  But anyways in worst case, you can connect the console to tv directly and then feed audio to receiver via ARC/eARC which should eliminate it completely.

And like keyo said, soundbar simulation is nowhere near an actual physically placed speaker setup. Also you can upgrade such a setup independently instead of having to replace the full soundbar. Even a basic AVR + speaker setup will sound better than many expensive soundbars.

Haha yeah. It's a toss up between a switch and a PC whichever way my son gravitates towards on his birthday later this year :P Right now switch is winning.

Yeah, the HT is 5.1

Switch anyday. Just buy 1st party stuff and he will be happy. All Mario games are a must have.

Bar 9.1 has the detachable wireless satellites so it’s not an entirely simulated surround sound. This made me tilt towards soundbar over receiver and speaker set up. Did 6 months of research on receivers, bookshelf speakers and satellites. I even did the concealed wiring to prepare, but eventually the Bar 9.1 ticked all the boxes for me (I’m not an audiophile, mind you) with a lot less cable clutter. Clutter is always a major downside for me, so I was willing to sacrifice a bit of sound quality (only a bit though because Bar 9.1 does sound phenomenal) for the convenience.

All true, but then you're veering dangerously close to receiver territory in terms of pricing. And a receiver does go much, much further in terms of features, utility, and modularity (you can upgrade just your center channel, for instance), especially if the concealed wiring provisions are already set up :fear1:

Yours is really convenient, though.

Hey, all of those games are technically cross-gen:P

Kidding! Cheers to next-gen gaming...when it actually picks up speed by next year

All 3 have haptic & trigger effect with better frame rate so technically it does give that little next-gen feel B)
