I've played Automata first and now playing Replicant I don't think you need to play it in order but I recommend to start with Replicant because Automata is much better in every aspects of this one. No idea for steam version. I've seen DF's comparison video of the versions... PS versions didn't have any anisotopic filtering, thus the texture was too blurry and I think they said it also runs at low res as well.
