Gran Turismo 5’s “Head Tracking” Explained

Shortly after Gran Turismo 5’s feature list popped up on Polyphony Digital’s website, pandemonium broke out as everyone rushed to secure an accurate translation. With the added excitement of the playable demo at GamesCom and our first look at damage, some pretty remarkable new features slipped under the collective radar. We’re going to put the spotlight on one of them today which could have an major impact on the racing game genre across platforms: “head tracking” with the PlayStation Eye.

The concept itself is simple enough -- it’s a camera that tracks the movement of your head -- but the results are breathtaking. If you’ve never seen this new technology in action, watch the following demo and you’ll quickly realize the implications of such a feature in Gran Turismo 5:

As we learned from Polyphony Digital’s website, you’ll be able to use this head tracking technology to manipulate the “cockpit camera” and presumably look through the corners and at your opponents with the simple turn of your head.

From the translation (confirmed by Yamauchi):

…the movement of Cockpit Camera interface (confirmed in full 3-D). The camera can be fully manipulated and you can opt to have your head tracked by the PSEye

Nissan’s GT Academy Contest: A Motorsports Success?

lucas-ordo-241-ez-and-alex-buncombe.jpg

emember Nissan’s GT Academy program, which sought to turn Gran Turismo 5 champions into racing drivers? It seems to have produced a GT4-class victor.

Lucas Ordoñez, along with co-driver Alex Buncombe, won the GT4 European Cup race in Spain last Saturday, allowing the duo to clinch the second-place series title. Eighteen months ago, however, Ordoñez was competing with thousands of other Playstation 3 gamers for a chance at some seat time.

“This has been the most amazing 18 months,” said Ordoñez. “When I look back at what has happened to me since I entered the online part of GT Academy on my PS3 there are just too many fantastic moments to list. The whole experience has been like a dream."

In 2008, Nissan announced its GT Academy program, which aimed to find the fastest GT5 player in Europe. The winner would then receive four months of race training, FIA racing licenses, and a car – a race-prepped 350Z – to field in the European GT4 championship. Although his team was plagued with a number of technical issues in the start, Ordoñez’s consistent driving helped ensure a string of victories.
