The Book Thread

Started reading A Game of Thrones a couple of days back. It is really good and still enjoyable even though I saw the tv series first, and also, as a result I now assign faces from the TV series to the names in the book.

Alistair MacLean's books are excellent thrillers, full of action. Try HMS Ulysses, Where Eagles Dare and Guns of Navarone if you like war time books.

For treasure hunting, I recommend Sahara by Clive Cussler (forget the movie, book was awesome).

Hope you like these :)

Reading Oath of the Vayuputra.. Nice but not as exciting as meluha so far..

That was expected. He had to take care of all the loose endings, plus a crore's deal BEFORE writing the final book didn't really get the best out of him.

Nevertheless, one damn lucky guy. Managed to snag another deal with Westland for 1 million USD for his next series ! :|

Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor have been signed up for a Bolly version of this trilogy, to be produced (or directed ?) by Karan Johar.

Finished A clash of kings (a song of ice and fire).

The first half of the book is quite slow but the last 1/3 is just phenomenal.

Still it could've been trimmer.

And unlike the first book, where the TV series followed the story 100%.. Things are many differences in 2nd book and the second season. I was presently surprised.

Off to third book, once I finish the first part, I'll watch the third season.)

That is one lucky sumbitch.. take that chetan bhagat

but truth be told, i lost interest mid way the second book, did not even finish it. The first was great, perfectly set up mythos, mystic, geographical locations. Loved it.

But the second book just sort of heaped on cliches after another and got lame  dont remember where i left reading it, might pick up some day just to get completion.

Like the idea about a movie but a solid  on karan johar. Hritik and kareena are good actors, often suffer from brad pitt syndrome wherein people dont credit their acting ability just because they have a pretty face, but it all boild down to the director and Johar is one way ticket to melodrama.

how does atheism affect one's ability to enjoy thing ? i am as atheist as they come and i also enjoy mythology a lot. i treat them as grand epics, great work of fiction, not gospels of truth.

why do you find hindu mythos boring ? not trying to flame but anyone with some interest in mythological literature would love hindu mythologies if he/she reads the proper work. mahabharata >>> all, even the greek writings of homer.

As for this Meluha, well, it is not particularly good, but still a very decent read- at lest the first book, the tone is not at all preachy (something what many retellings of hindu mythologies suffer from- perhaps your source of boredom ?) and there is this interesting concept of clans- Sun, moon and serpent all with various ideologies of right and wrong with shiva in the centre.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finished reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Was a good read. Appreciate the way author had managed to weave the storyline based on the religious beliefs of settlers on American soil.... A lot of references went over my head sin e the subject is so diverse. Will not call it a must read. But give it a try if u r into fiction. U wont regret it :D
