Xbox 360 Jasper revision spotted in the wild

If you're wondering what is exactly Jasper is, and what it has to do with the Xbox 360, we'd suggest referring to our prior in-depth analysis.

For those in the know, you'll be aware that the search for a Jasper Xbox 360 console has been underway for many months. Jasper, successor to Falcon, brings with it the promise of a GPU shrink down to 65nm, and hope of a cooler, quieter console that isn't susceptible to the infamous RROD.

Up until now, that search has proven fruitless. Today, we've got our first real glimpse of Jasper consoles in the wild. Over at the Xbox Scene forums, two community members have posted images of new Xbox 360 consoles that come bundled with revised 150W power supplies. That's 25W less than the power supply bundled with Falcon consoles, and almost certain proof that these are indeed the first two Jasper units to be identified.

In fear of voiding their warranty, neither user is willing to crack open their consoles in order to provide a look at the 65nm GPU we presume is sitting inside. Nevertheless, the images provide manufacturing dates that suggest any console produced after October 23rd 2008 will contain the less power-hungry innards. The console pictured carries a lot number of 0843X, from manufacturing team FDOU.

If you're on the lookout for a Jasper console, look for the all-important manufacturing date. If that isn't enough, ask a retailer to open the box so you can check for the 150W power supply before you make your purchase. All we need now is someone to pry open a box so we can all take a peek inside and see what else has changed.

With my own Xbox 360 currently heading to Microsoft's German repair centre, I'm pinning my hopes on a Jasper replacement.

Jasper Motherboard in the Wild: 256MB Internal 'MU', 150W PSU, ...

>> It looks like the first Jasper motherboards (which should have the new 65nm GPU) are now out in the wild!

Moddage posted pictures of his new Jasper 360 on our forums (here and here) and we also received some pictures from The Dude Z. Both are Arcade SKUs made 10-23-2008 Lot #0843X by Team FDOU.

The new power supply is now 150W (25W less than those used with Falcon boards) and the plug has of course been changed so u can't plugin this PSU into an older motherboard.

Other unannounced change ... the onboard flash chip has grown from 16MB to 256MB. Microsoft included internal memory storage, so the Arcade SKU now ships without (external) Memory Unit and the new NXE dash will install fully on the flashchip (rather than requiring a HDD or external MU). But the internal memory can also be used to store gamesave data, XBLA games, videos or whatever ... u can use it asif it was a 256MB MU.

The motherboard design didn't change much ... besides the bigger flash and what's probably the new 65nm GPU, we also see a new south bridge model ... the rest (videochip, CPU, heatsinks, general board layout, ...) seems pretty much similar to falcon boards.

It also appears there are RAM chips on the bottom of the board again (without thermal pads even) ... Microsoft recently switched to RAM chips with double capacity so they could drop the 4 chips on bottom (and only place 4 on the top) ... but apparently they are back (old stock maybe?).

Jasper has BUILT-IN 256mb Flash Storage

Xbox-Scene comfirmed, along with confirmation that the 0843X FDOU batch with 150W power supplies are Jaspers.

Xbox-Scene also confirmed that NXE is pre-loaded on the arcade units.

Kudos to MS..

Redington says that they are out of pro model stocks and they will be restocked in a week, so will can we get "newer" falcon models or maybe Jasper .. i know its hoping for too much anyways. I just guess they are out of refurbished old pro models.

Source or fail.

I meant to say that i have asked for a console replacement. Mine is a pro console and they have been saying since 10 days that they do not have any stock of pro consoles and have loads of cores lying atound. So can we hope for a falcon or jasper replacement?

Confirming Your Jasper

If you can physically open the box, there's another way of confirming that you have a Jasper without even opening the plastic bag that the console comes in: look at the power connector on the Xbox 360 itself. Each Xbox 360 generation has a power connector that's keyed differently so you can't use a lower powered power supply on a console that requires more power. Now all Xbox 360 power supplies will work on newer consoles, but you can't use newer power supplies on older consoles. Make sense? Let me explain:

The first Xbox 360 (Xenon) needs a 203W power supply. Falcon needs a 175W power supply but can also work with the 203W unit (it just doesn't need to draw that much power so the 203W unit is overkill, but it'll work). Jasper needs 150W but can work with a 203W and a 175W. In other words, the Xbox 360 power supplies are forwards but not backwards compatible.

If you get a Jasper it's not guaranteed that you'll get a 150W power supply, Microsoft still has a lot of Falcons and Falcon-parts in its distribution system so some Jaspers have been sighted with 175W power supplies. If you end up with a 175W unit it's not a big deal, it's going to be slightly less efficient than the 150W unit and your system may end up drawing an extra few watts but it's not a big deal at all - you'll still be far cooler/more power efficient than a Falcon (and possibly be red-ring-free).

To prevent an under powered power supply from being used in the wrong Xbox, Microsoft keyed each of the three Xbox 360 generations differently. The chart below explains it all:

identifying.jpg

If you see one flat bar on top and a square peg in the middle of the power connector on the console itself you've got a 1st generation Xenon or Zephyr board, these machines use 90nm CPUs and GPUs. If you've just got a flat bar on top with no square peg in the middle, you've got a 2nd generation Opus or Falcon board, these things use 65nm CPUs and 80nm GPUs. Finally if you've got a flat bar split in two on top with no square peg you've got a Jasper, that's a board with a 65nm CPU and a 65nm GPU.
