kitson007
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/12/xbox_360_blu-ray Microsoft has said it may ship a Blu-ray Disc drive for its Xbox 360 games console should consumers prefer that next-generation optical disc format over HD DVD. Speaking to Japanese-language website ITmedia, Microsoft's Peter Moore, head of the company's Interactive Entertainment Division, also said that the console will never sport an integrated HD DVD drive. MarketTantrik
Old news dude. But the flexibility is there. As of now, M$ is firmly in the HD-DVD camp as a partner to Toshiba.
CarbonCore
Microsoft is not in love with HD-DVD and its not do-or-die situation for them like Sony and blu-ray. M$ is in with HD-DVD only because it supports their VC-1 codec and gets a licensing fee. Blu-ray uses the rival H.264 which is free, though both H.264 and VC-1 have been standardized for blu-ray and HD-DVD along with older MPEG-2 format. If tomorrow the blu-ray format starts supporting VC-1 and HD-DVD goes with H.264, M$ wont hesitate in dumping its support for HD-DVD and go with blu-ray. MarketTantrik
Like I said, M$ is a HD-DVD partner for now, but the fact that the drive is an addon and M$ have publicly stated that they will never integrate HD-DVD into the X360 console bodes well for a Blu-Ray addon somewhere down the line. To me, it looks pretty much inevitable given the sales ratios between HD-DVD and BD movies.
