Castlevania is like Metroid, which is imho more of a third person adventure than a hack and slash title.

dude, have u seen videos of Lord of shadows ?? they were show during e3 and it is another inspiration from god of war.

and discounting the castlevania title on wii. the 2 that were on ps2, lament of innocence and one other whose name i cant remember were poor man's devil may cry.

I hope Koji san puts some much needed juice in upcoming castlevania and make it as good as DI and gow, yet a bit different cause.. i mean hello.. vampires.. the epitome of awesomeness (the first person who brings twilight gets a size 9.5 boot up the arse)

kojima has openly said that the original god of war is exactly how a 3d castlevania should have been made. btw kojima or the rest of KP are not directly involved with the development of lord of shadows.

Some input from my end:

The red cross is a crusader/papal symbol (ie, pure Catholicism) which I personally would not associate with Dante. His writings are very Catholic but you'll notice a lot of pagan symbolism in them as well. Conflicted, just as he was (IMHO).

Secondly, I believe all the kiddies out here need a lesson in ancient literature. Gramps, Keyo, anyone care to do the honours?

i believe longfellow's digital copy (with ps3) should suffice, but yeah this games makes me want to read the poem again (this time properly and full) i mean yes i know that the game is verrry loosely based on it but the poem is a must read for everyone. lots of subtle impression on the world around us, in games, in movies.

eeyup, but i believe it was more having a different view from the church, so he infused some "pagan" symbols in the writings, cause u know, free speech was'nt exactly appreciated by the vatican at that time.

Firstly, I thought Pante would be all over this thread considering the game title.

There are three versions - the crappy one penned by a smoked up Italian poet who be trippin'; the in-game story which seems straight out of Assassins' Creed (the opening lines made me think they shipped the wrong demo); the one with Kratos in it.

Facts for those who want to know:

Dante Alighieri was a 13th century poet who wrote a small pome called Commedia. The pome was divided into three parts - Infero, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Unfortunately, we really care about the first one because everyone saw the movie se7en, and no one cares to read 14,000 lines of translated old Italian. Basically, Dante got high and wrote about his supposed journey through the three firmaments over the period Good Friday to Easter. This is 1300s so Christian fervour is high and the church is trying its utmost to convert people to Christianity by promising everlasting glory or utter damnation.

Dante's guide through Hell and Purgatory is the Roman poet Virgil. Go look him up in Wikipedia or take a refresher course in literature. His guide through Heaven is Beatrice, whom he had a crush on. Not his wife who was murdered and laid in the field with her bodice ripped strategically. Dante was also not connected to the Crusades / Templars / Saladin / Richard the Lionheart in any way whatsoever. The only connection would've been if some of his friends had gone to the Crusades. This guy is a poet, and did not tattoo the cross on his chest.

In the poem, Dante is lost in a wood and attacked by three beasts - a lion, a leopard and a wolf. Each stand for a type of sin - self-indulgent, violent, and malicious. The seven sins and nine circles of hell are also divided into three broad categories. Inferno is about the recognition of sin and penitence and punishment.

FYI - the entrance to Hell has the famous inscription which translates to "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here".

Structure of Hell:

First Circle - Limbo - basically the sinless but those who did not believe in Christ. So all the wise people and / or unbaptized are here. Notable residents - Aristotle, Socrates, Plato.

Second circle - Lust. Self explanatory. Ask nemo if you want to know more. Notable residents - Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, Achilles. I've always thought Achilles suffered from Pride.

Third circle - Gluttony. When you eat 17 aloo parathas.

Fourth circle - Avarice aka Greed in the movie se7en. When Saha wants to buy three copies of MW2 that's avarice.

Fifth circle - Wrath and Sloth. Every gamer who plays Demons' Souls sitting on a bean bag is part of this circle.

Sixth circle - Heresy. Saying stuff like "PS3 is the best".

Seventh circle - Violence. Suicides, guys who prefer bros to hos, anarchists make up these. I expect a minotaur will be here in game.

Eight circle - Fraud. Selling a RROD 360 here and on consoul. You get the idea. Fraud and the next one are the biggest sins, because these are sins which are committed knowingly.

Ninth circle - Treachery. If you think this game will be a clone of GoW wait till you come to this level. There be Titans here. I can see some copyright suits coming up.

Final boss / Centre of Hell - Lucifer for committing treachery against God. Henchmen are Brutus and Cassius (killed Caesar and forever screwed Italy's chance of becoming a superpower till Hitler came along); and Judas (go read the Bible you heathens).

Phew - let me know if you guys need a crash course in Greek / Roman myth (God of War). More interesting because apparently everyone slept with everyone.
