Assembling a PC -- Head Here

Guys,

I might be building a gaming PC for my self in 1-2 months. I went through some sites and forums and realized I don't know squat about a lot of things :hypocrite:

1. How do you overclock the CPUs and GPU and memories? Is it necessary/helpful? What do you mean when they say memory clocks are 9-9-9-24?!?!? :P

Is there some special software that'll help or do you have to dig into the BIOS and do some special technical tweaking? Or should I buy the OC'ed/Amp'd edition of the video cards instead of doin the OC myself since i am a noob in this regard.

2. Regarding cooling. Is it required? CPU/GPU cooling? I read on so many websites about thermal pastes and CPU coolers, heatsinks, GPU coolers . Are these mandatory? My usage will be gaming and gaming all titles till date (though not for long hours at stretch) and other mundane tasks.

3. Ok, I might get a lot of lols for this. But I dont have any experience in building PCs. I know Theitwares website will assemble all the components you buy from them but is it possible to buy all components and assemble them yourself? Will it be easier/cheaper? Any websites/books that help. Or since I am in Chennai, can anyone suggest some good technical person who can do the job.

Till now after hours of spending time, I've zeroed down on a few components

i7-920

Asus P6T X58 based motherboard,

GTX260/280 probably, not decided yet

Corsair 620HX PSU,

OCZ/Corsair RAM

A lot of questions, some insight would be great :)

1. Thats memory latency timings...AFAIK

S/w's are there..and the voltage mods needs you to do it physically

2. If you want to OC then extra cooling be nice.. like Core contact for the Proccy... RAM coolers.... better get the corsair dominator if you like....

3. Yes ofcourse you can assemble it.... if you are not so sure..just call a frnd who knows so that u dont screw up

Thats a great config ... get the 295..better than 280....

I've been gaming on the PC for the last 15 years now and I don't really bother with #1 and #2. I've been doing fine without all that.

For #3, yes it's very much possible to DIY your new PC. But if you lack experience I'd suggest having an expert do it, you could end up frying components y'know. Most engineers take anything from 500 - 1000 bucks to assemble a PC.

Let's see, 295 is still out of my reach. Since I might build in June, hopefully prices will fall. And is cooling only required if usage is extreme? What if I dont OC? Will I then be needing to put those pastes on the CPU or extra fans etc? Off track question, but do people with extreme usage only use cooling devices and those thermal pastes?

Hmm, okay, so I guess u dont bother with all the benchmarking tools and are not a power user like me? Moderate gaming on high settings, daily tasks would not require #1 and #2?

I guess I will not assembly myself. I dont think I should risk it. Might as well call my systems guy whose pretty knowledgeable and also has the requisite screwdrivers, static free gloves etc

A friend needs a Hi-End Gaming Rig. (4-8GB Ram, powerful graphics card etc... the works)

Budget: 80k - 1lakh

Purpose: Gaming & Comp needs to be on for almost 24x7 so will require a good cooling system etc...

Can order stuff from the US too as my office ppl keep coming down, thus would help if you can tell me if huge diff in price as which part can be picked up from US and remaining from here...

Thanks guys im a noob in PC gaming thus require the experts to help build a super comp. :hypocrite:

^^ Even 4GB RAM is overkill. He won't be needing more than that unless he's planning to use it as a web/database server :)

Prices in US are significantly lower but with taxes and (possibly) customs while getting them here will add to the cost. I would recommend only getting the graphics card from the states.

I'll let other PC gurus here recommend exact specs.

80k-1L is a pretty good budget. Here is what I would go with (most of this is from a TE thread)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6/ ASUS Maximus II Formula

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650

Cooling: Sunbeamtech Core-Contact Freezer

Memory: Corsair Dominator 4GB 1066MHz DDR2

Video: eVGA GeForce GTX 295 1GB

Storage: Western Digital 10EACS 1TB

Cabinet: Antec 1200 /Cooler Master HAF

Power Supply: Corsair HX 1000W

Optical Drive: L.G. GH22NS30 SATA/Samsung SH-S22F SATA

Display: Dell 24" S2409

Input: Logitech Logitech G15 Version 2 Keyboard and Razer DeathAdder

Mouse Pad: Razer Goliathus Large/Logitech MX518

Alternatively you can go for a Corei7 based rig which would be a bit better IMO but am not too sure about the config for that or the prices.

You can check the Biostar TA 790GX mobo and for PSU you can go for Corsair CX400/VX 450 or Tagan TG500, cabinet

you can go with the Cooler Master RC-330-KKRB-GP or RC-330-KWN1-GP.

^^ thanks man... really useful info... considering that the 4850 card heats up a lot under load do u think that i need a cooler??

Cooler for what GFX or CPU, and as jeri mentioned if you are gonna

OC you should consider a good after market Cooler..........

Let us know are you thinking of OC'ing it or not ??????????

A CPU cooler basically... the 4850 card had some heating issues when it was released... so am thinking of getting a factory overclocked edition... so i might OC the CPU sometime in the future  so if everything falls into my budget then i can get it together...
