AtheK
^He would also need a good mobo too right. His config could have the barebones intel mobo if the board supports core2duo 99.99% it will support PCI-e

Cortez
Guys..I need to upgrade one of my old systems,so would like your advise on what specs to go for.Not looking for monitor..only wanna upgrade the CPU.Budget is 25k as the system will be used for net surfing and some gaming(TF2,L4D etc.).Only thing I'll be salvaging from the old CPU would be the DVD burner. So looking for specifications that would fit under this budget cause it's time I get rid of this ancestral trash.

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P31-ES3G 2.9k Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 5.7k RAM: Transcend 2x2GB DDR2 800MHz 2.2k GPU: Palit HD 4770 512MB DDR5 6.5k HDD: Seagate 7200.12 500GB SATAII 3k Cabinet: Cooler Master Elite 334 ATX 2k SMPS: Cooler Master Extreme 460W 2.5k Copied and pasted from a TE thread. If you can spare some extra cash (3k or so) upgrade the GPU to a 4850 which will give you much better longevity.
Cortez
@Afty-Thx for the config..just a few questions though.. 1.Is the GIGABYTE brand good? 2.Going for an 600W smps(brand suggestions and price would be nice) @Jeri-It's a P4 system(1.8ghz..yes you read that right)..gonna use the dvd burner cause I had no probs with it yet and still runs good. Aftrunner
A Gigabyte motherboard should be good. My cousin has been using one on his C2D PC for well over a year and hasnt had a problem with it. And his PC is left on almost 14-18 hours a day. Corsair is always a good bet on SPMS. They have a 600W one which migh cost about ~7k. TBH on your rig (at least the one I suggested) a 600W SMPS would be a total waste. If you plan on getting an SLI/Crossfire mobo and plan on using the SLI/CF featyre it might be a good idea but otherwise 600W on a normal rig is always an overkill. sublimestuff
2.Going for an 600W smps(brand suggestions and price would be nice) I have a Cooler Master Extreme Power 600W PSU (paid 3.3k, 1.5 years ago) and it comfortably runs a 8800 Ultra. Why this is impressive is because of this: CM extreme power 600W is a Seventeam ST500BKP (500W PSU) tweaked and rebadged The ATI 4770 you are buying consumes MUCH less power than the 8800 Ultra. What is important is that you buy quality. You can also look into a Corsair VX450 (a rebadged Seasonic 500W PSU). Not sure about the cost but somewhere between 3-4k, methinks. dhruvrock2000
Hi , i'm kinda new here especially in the PC Section... Well the thing is that i'm going in for a complete new gaming solution.... Now i'm thinkin of buying the PS3 for gaming purposes coz i wont be able to upgrade the GPU often but need a basic pc.... so could someone suggest me a basic pc config for around 20k , i dont want to go in for a GPU now but might add one later on and would prefer a motherboard compatible with nVidia cards coz i would like to use CUDA in the future for video encoding. Also monitor should not be included in the cost coz i'm looking at a Dell 24" Full HD Monitor separately to be used with both the PC and the PS3.... Thanks
Aftrunner
Motherboard: Biostar TA790GXB - 4.5k Processor: AMD X2 7750+ - 3.6k RAM: Transcend 2x2GB DDR2 800MHz - 2.2k HDD: Seagate 250GB ST3250310AS SATAII - 2.3k Cabinet: Cooler Master Elite 334 ATX 2k SMPS: Cooler Master Extreme 460W 2.5k Keyboard: Samsung Pleomax - .2k Mouse: Logitech Optical - .4k The motherboard has a decent onboard GPU. It wont run Crysis but you will still be able to play a lot of games. Plus it will do HD movies quite nicely too and has HDMI support. I have no idea what you mean by a motherboard compatible with nVidia cards because anything with a PCI-E slot will work with an Nvidia card. Overall though if you want my advice, chuck the PS3 idea and shove a 4850/260 Graphics card in there. You will save 15k and can play a crapload of amazing games. Oh n about the nvidia mobo thing, stupid mistake of mine !!! but i havent pu in a gpu in a my system since forever !!! so it did slip my mind Thanks ! Aftrunner
Hmm if you have games that you want to play on a PS3 go for it. Its a good buy. You can always put in a GPU later.
Nemo
hi. I wanna upgrade my pee cee so that i can play some of the old titles.. PoP, a*s creed, slent hill, etc. I'd like to play games releasing this year at a decent level as well. I mean stuff like dead rising 2, a*s creed 2. What future does a 4850 has. I mean can it play a fall out 3 at quality output ?? how much life does it hav in it? will it be able to play games relesed till, say jan 2010 at mid to high levels ?? I ask all this because I dont hav much clue about PC gaming. One of my friends suggested me ATI 4850 as a good card. Also can someone help me figure out a PC upgrade, built around 4850 (or any other card in its price range and quality) in about 20k ?? I have a cabinet, mouse, keyboard, monitor, dvd writer. Just need the basic juice to run games. Also it will help if u can type in n00b-talk. I just know the names mobo, processor, GPU. Dont really know what thy are and what functions they have.
