Aftrunner
This is probably a moot question but why would you want to assemble a desktop PC? I am betting money that you could build a comparative rig to that Dell XPS for about 30% less. Anyways regarding your question its impossible to say if you can use crossfire without knowing if your motherboard supports it.
scath
^^^this was the PC. http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/con...;s=dhs&fb=1 I couldn't find the mobo specified anywhere.......... BTW this is very price worthy Try getting all these components yourself.they'd work out to be almost the same...!!
Aftrunner
^^ Ahh not a bad rig then. Not a bad price either. Keep in mind you will still pay taxes on that price but still its not as inflated over market price as I thought. Doesn't mention much about the mobo. Give me 15 minutes to find out. scath
I think i Got it............intel X58 chipset......... What do you reckon would be the taxes on this thing?? Delivery is 1500 aprox. + I think i would get it at 2-3k cheaper than the price mentioned on the site......... The phone operators usually give that much discount..........If i rem correctly...!! arun360
You open up your OEM PC, you lose the warranty.
scath
^^What??? That sucks,man......... I guess adding a second 4870 counts as opening up your PC....!!
Aftrunner
^^ Not true. It doesn't void your warranty. They just wont support the desktop if as long as its in SLI/Crossfire mode. Just remove your 2nd GPU and you should be fine.
arun360
Dell continues to support if you add/remove components?
scath
^^^^^So you saw the motherboard right??It supports Crossfire naa??
Aftrunner
Dell continues to support if you add/remove components? Thats not what I said. They only support the configuration they shipped. You are free to add/remove components but to avail warranty/tech support the PC will need to be in the same config that it was shipped. They wont support any extra stuff that you add later. Unless its bought from them. Just remove all the extra crap you put in. @scath Havent seen the mobo yet. Cant find any information thats specific. Best bet is to call them and ask. Panthelon
The Dell Studio XPS 435 MT has an Intel X58 Smackover motherboard. It has only one PCIe 2.0 slot so crossfire is not possible, unless you get a dual-chip card such as a 4870X2. To do this, there is a drawback, this system comes with only a 360W PSU ; I know. So, you'll have to change the PSU to a decent 500W and above as well. This totally negates the price advantage that you're talking about (new GPU + PSU). As for Dell not honoring your warranty if you open you're system tower, that's not true. If there is any Dell-shipped part that's faulty, that particular part will be replaced. AtheK
above all you can't crossfire 4850 with 4870...they have to be similar cards
Aftrunner
^^ Actually......... Edit : What that means is that cards that have the same architecture can be used in crossfire. Eg All cards beginning with 48 i.e. 4850, 4870 etc. The "similar" restriction is limited to Nvidia.

Aftrunner
^^ NP. Actually crossfiring a 4850 with 4870 isn't that good an idea. Performance gains over 4850X2 are almost negligible.

Panthelon
^^ if you know anyone with an MSDN subscription, then you might be able to get your hands on a legitimate version for download. Otherwise, stick to XP for now as Windows 7 is just round the corner.
