Also, I heard that some games do not run well on SDTV. Is this true? Is there a list of what games do not run on SDTV?

Actually, yes. In some games, particularly Disgaea 3, the text appears very small on SDTVs and you have to strain to see it or walk right up to the TV.

ON an HDTV .. no problem, everything is crystal clear.

Hi,

Thanks to all of you for your replies!!! It has cleared most of my doubts! Yeah i know HDTV is much much better, but since right now I cant afford one (as 32 inch is quite expensive) and since I wanted to get ino the PS3 experience, I was very curious as to how the PS3 would run on SDTV, and thanks to all you guys, I now know that I wont be disappointed :-)!!!

Also, I am so glad to know that the online gaming would run fine with my 256 kbps connection (though I know downloading the demos would be a pain ... Ouch!!).

So me running to the store now to get the PS3!!!chow!!

Thanks to all once again!!

Regards,

Angy

Hi Angaare

Welcome to GI.

My responses to your queries,

1) I only have a SDTV (480i). I have tried to look for info regarding how games would look on it, and have got mixed views on it. Now, I know that the difference between HDTV and SDTV is huge, so im not comparing the two, but I do wanna know how the games look on a SDTV? Do they still look beautiful, as in, do they look much much better than PS2 graphics (specially compared to games like MGS3), since people say PS3 games on SDTV look like PS2 games. I have played games on a SDTV throughout, so am not yet spoilt by HDTV. Also, I heard that some games do not run well on SDTV. Is this true? Is there a list of what games do not run on SDTV?

PS3 games look beautiful even on a SDTV, so dont worry at all. The improvement over the PS2 visual quality is stunning, even on a SDTV

2) Secondly, I have a MTNL internet connection with 256 kpbs unlimited D/L. I was wondering if this is good enough to play the games online? I have read posts telling that they have played with the same connection without any issues. But my concern is, whether FPS shooters play fine with this connection? I am planning to move to 516 kbps unlimited plan, but cannot move beyond that as then the Download Limit Cap comes into the picture, which gets risky. I am planning to buy Killzone 2 and am worried if I would be able to play it without lags?? Also, how frequently do lags happen in an online game?? Is it very bad or non-noticeable??

256 kbps is the minimum bandwidth required for smooth online gaming. More important than download speed is the upload speed, and this is where most Indian ISPs suffer because they normally have a 1:2 or 1:4 ratio for upload : download speeds. Plus the fact that a small portion of your bandwidth is lost due to transmission inefficiencies, will hamper your online play experience. I recommend switching to 512 kbps as soon as possible. I personally used a Tata Indicom 512 kbps unlimited connection because it offered a 1:1 U/D ratio and I never faced a problem with online gaming. You should also remember that no matter how fast your connection, you will always face lag when plaing against opponents from far off regions like the US.

3) Thirdly, here in India, do we get all the games as soon as they release in, say, US or Europe or do we have to wait for months, like it used to be the case with PS2 games 2-3 years ago?

Games release on the same day or very close to international release. But some games are never officially released in India, so we rely on imports from sites like Play Asia, GAME or ShopTo for these titles. (affiliate links at the bottom of this page). But generally, there are no worries as far as releases are concerned.

4) Is the 80GB model better (as in more reliable) than the 40GB one (apart from the controller and extra HDD)

The 80GB model is the one you should buy.

5) Can you play online with anyone and everyone, or do you need to have friends beforehand (as none of my friends own a PS3)

Most online games have random matchmaking or server browsers through which you can play with anyone all over the world. No need to add them to your friend's list first.

6) Do you think we would be getting a Killzone 2 bundle, specially since Europe is getting one?

No Killzone 2 bundle has been announced for India as of now.

7) Does the Logitech Driving Force EX wheel, launched in India, work with all racing games (including motorstorm 2). I mean with all the functionalities like force feedback etc. Also are the worth it?? I mean do you really feel all the bumps and hits???

Dont bother with a driving wheel unless you want to achieve perfection in games like Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, GRID or Formula 1 Championship Edition. It is unnecessary for Motorstorm.

Hope this helps.

i would say PS3 games on SDTV look worse than PS2 games....In many games you won't be able to read text.....i would say at least hook it up to your PC monitor

512 unlimited should be just fine i think

Sony first party - day one

Microsoft first party - usually day one...a little later for less important titles

Activision - recent games have released very close to worldwide release (COD world at war came before release date)

EA - a week within worldwide release

Take Two (Rockstar, 2K) - a week within worldwide release

rest depend on game-to-game basis

4) Is the 80GB model better (as in more reliable) than the 40GB one (apart from the controller and extra HDD)

it is more power-efficient and possibly has a better blu ray drive

5) Can you play online with anyone and everyone, or do you need to have friends beforehand (as none of my friends own a PS3)

anyone

6) Do you think we would be getting a Killzone 2 bundle, specially since Europe is getting one?

possible, but only after the current R2 and Motorstorm bundles are out of stock so dont hold your breath

7) Does the Logitech Driving Force EX wheel, launched in India, work with all racing games (including motorstorm 2). I mean with all the functionalities like force feedback etc. Also are the worth it?? I mean do you really feel all the bumps and hits???

if you can stretch your budget a bit, get the Driving Force GT (specially designed for GT5)...it will set u back about 10k and works only with PS3

if you really wanna go crazy, get the mother of them all - the G25 - with clutch...it works with PS2, PS3 and PC....20k

peace

Just to add my 2 cents in on this...

The game experience will be quite underwhelming for you, on an SDTV. And I'll go on record saying that's an understatement. if you cannot buy an HDTV (you could try 26", that's what I use) you could go in for a good LCD monitor which is HDCP enabled. A simple DVI-HDMI cable will do the trick for you. a little extra for good quality speakers and you're good to go.

I cannot emphasize enough what you'd miss out on by playing on an SDTV. I had my PS3 running on an SDTV for a month, played Burnout Paradise and F1 CE and they looked positively appalling. The difference it made by getting the HDTV cannot be put in words. The PS3 literally begs for a good display and anyone suggesting otherwise has gotta be kidding.

:surprise: 20k for a Driving wheel :surprise:

Having bought a ps3 about 1.5 months before getting a HD monitor, I can safely say with experience that ps3 games on SDTV are not impressive, and it would be accurate to say they look like ps2 games. But as hundredproofsam said, yes, some parts of it would be even worse. For e.g. I played GTA4 for a few days on SDTV, and most of the picture was like ps2, but the map/radar was almost impossible to read, because it had been designed for HD and the detail jsut could not be displayed usefully on a SDTV.

Generally, ,anything above 128kbps is fine for online gaming, as far as bandwidth is concerned, but yes, the problem that all of us in India face is a case of bad pings. If you are playing a shooting game, your shot will register about half a second later. But don't worry, as more people get online in India, this situation should improve (eventually).

3) Thirdly, here in India, do we get all the games as soon as they release in, say, US or Europe or do we have to wait for months, like it used to be the case with PS2 games 2-3 years ago?

Not months, but there may be a slight delay.. a couple of days to a week. Depends on the game, really, so can't make a generalization.

4) Is the 80GB model better (as in more reliable) than the 40GB one (apart from the controller and extra HDD)

It's the same thing. And anyone looking for more HDD space should anyway just upgrade the HDD to something like 320GB +

5) Can you play online with anyone and everyone, or do you need to have friends beforehand (as none of my friends own a PS3)

No, it's not restricted to your friends. But some rooms you can't get into because we have those high ping issues.

6) Do you think we would be getting a Killzone 2 bundle, specially since Europe is getting one?

No idea.

Now, that's uber-sense for you. :majesty:

Beg/borrow/steal or more realistically get an EMI deal and go for a HD monitor.

Make the big investment on the PS3 count , you may cut corners by sticking to the 256kbps connection for now.
