Microsoft launches GTA IV bundle!

Reports flooding in of a counter to Sony’s PS3 bundle.

by: James Cottee 22/04/2008

We’ve received word that Microsoft has come up with a response to Sony’s (still not officially announced) PS3+GTA IV bundle.

Follow the links here and here, and you’ll see that bundles are already appearing that include an Xbox 360 console and BOTH Halo 3 and GTA IV.

It seems odd that Microsoft would bother making a bundle for the ‘Arcade’ edition of the console, considering that it doesn’t include a hard drive, and as such won’t support the much-touted upcoming DLC content out of the box.

They probably know what they’re doing, but we have trouble fathoming this decision.

The bundles are not exclusive to that particular online retailer – a mole inside of the department store chain David Jones has also confirmed both bundles are showing up on their distributor website. They’ll retail for $499.95 (Arcade) and $679.95 (Pro).

Both these deals are selling at a huge discount to the recommended retail prices of their constituent parts – Microsoft is basically giving away Halo 3 for free.

Microsoft should Attack Sony with GTA IV DLC

DLC announcement: what is Microsoft waiting for?

by: Chris Stead 22/04/2008

From Gameplayer

_______________________________________________________________

How come Microsoft hasn’t told the world what will be available in the GTA IV DLC? It would seem to us that now would be the perfect time to make a splash. The impression we have been getting from the various GTA IV discussions that are raging about the Net is that there are still plenty of users sitting on the fence regarding which version of the game to buy: PS3 or Xbox 360.

It would seem to us that a compelling argument in favour of the Xbox 360 version would be stellar DLC. If Microsoft was able to come out with a press release today stating as fact that there will be ‘x’ amount more hours of gameplay, or ‘y’ increase to the map size, or ‘z’ new story threads, it would go a long way towards tipping the scales in the Xbox 360’s direction.

Really, what would Sony have to come back with? Reliability is its strong suit, but as we discussed yesterday, hopefully Microsoft has a plan to deal with this and certainly the popular and critically praised online infrastructure is hard to ignore. Microsoft has a $50 million dollar trump card: for God’s sake play it now!

We can think of three reasons as to why they are holding on to such an announcement. First, and possibly most obvious, is that the DLC is sh*t: but we would find that very hard to believe. As we discussed in the article Rockstar DLC Under Pressure, there is simply too much riding on it for it to be anything less than brilliant.

Second is that Microsoft has the information, but does not feel the time is right. Delaying it, however, would seem to have limited benefits. There will be no convincing gamers who opt for the PS3 version of the game now to reinvest in the Xbox 360 option down the track. Preferably they need to lure as many people as possible to the Xbox 360 prior to GTA IV’s release if they want to ultimately profit in a big way from their investment down the track. Announcing the DLC would do that. Plus it wouldn’t undermine Microsoft’s ability to make two more big splashes down the track when the DLC is ready and thus capture more console sales on the back of the game.

Third would be that Rockstar has control over when the information is leaked, and they’re not letting it out. The company is notoriously rigid when it comes to where and how news regarding its products is released, but it would seem preposterous that Microsoft has no say in how the DLC is marketed given the investment they’ve made in the product. It’s not like they need to tell us exact details: just broad strokes to sway minds one way or the other. And Rockstar has a vested interest in the DLC doing well, too.

Indeed Rockstar are stepping outside their comfort zone with multiplayer and DLC in this version of GTA, and Microsoft is the console which can fulfil the promises of these two components best at present (PlayStation Home pending), so we can’t really see why they would want to reduce Microsoft’s chances of success by limiting their opportunity to capture the biggest online GTA IV community possible.

Obviously Sony and Rockstar have an established relationship, and as we pointed out in the article Rockstar Screws Microsoft, the two would appear to have formed some sort of attack strategy for the PS3 version. But ultimately the DLC needs to be a success for both Rockstar and Microsoft regardless of their other interests.

So it all just seems a little weird to us. Does DLC just not matter enough?

We’ve written a stack of articles over the last few weeks regarding GTA IV and the ebbs and flows of the promotional strategies of all the players involved. We’ve monitored your (often aggressive) responses across the globe and it would seem like it does matter, one way or the other, to a lot of you. We don’t think the DLC will have a direct impact on the majority of GTA consumers as the game’s broad fan base ensures that knowledgeable gamers in the minority. But the flow on effect from positive press and word of mouth generated by a DLC announcement may catch on in broader circles.

In the article Microsoft in GTA IV Panic we commented on the troubles the company will have in luring PS2 owners away from Sony’s PS3, as the PlayStation brand is where they’re used to playing GTA. DLC is a big weapon in this fight: c’mon Microsoft, it’s time to use it!

Probability:

Hmm.. Would make a good poll.... :P

Official US Xbox Magzine gives GTA IV 9.5/10

From: http://www.gtagaming.com/gtagaming/news/comments.php?i=1314

______________________________________________________________

They awarded the game 9.5 out of 10 for its "wonderful environment", "deep multiplayer" and for offering over 90 missions in single player. They say that multiplayer includes a 'Party Mode' where you're free to switch among gametypes with friends without having the game disconnect or split players up.

They say that you'll also be able to progress through eleven different ranks online and that it's possible to call the other team using the game cell phone during multiplayer. The only problem which the magazine feels the game has is that it has too many "filler missions" which don't develop the story at all.
