Why I Don't Like GTA, Or: Why I'm Hyped for GTA IV

The success of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most important things that has happened to gaming in the last ten years. Since GTA III, the way people make games, the way we (the gamers) talk about them, the way the rest of the world talks about them, and most importantly the way we play them, has all changed. That's all well established and not hard to argue. It's also a different story, because what I want to talk about here is one or two reasons why I have never liked GTA and why I think the way I feel might be changing very soon.

People always talk about the variety of GTA's gameplay. And sure, you get a lot of stuff to do in GTA, but none of it is especially fun or well-implemented. Want to drive any car in a city? Prepare for a world of slippery handling where "omg different cars drive differently" means that one vehicle is less likely to get you killed than another. And how could a studio with such a massive and revolutionary vision get the one thing wrong that has been done in almost every other game: killing other people?

I've got nothing against games with variety or sandbox games, but I'd rather have a game that gives me two things to do and makes them really fun than a lot of things that aren't very fun at all. I loved Crackdown, because it was a sandbox game that got the little things right: jumping, shooting, and throwing (eh maybe not driving) – all minuscule actions that an entire sprawling playground of a world were built around. You can't get 100 different haircuts in Crackdown or get a jumbo meal of fried chicken, but in the end, what's a sandbox if it's full of broken toys?

I have to admit that I might be getting off on ruffling some feathers here, but I've always been sad to find that the GTA games were so unplayable to me because I really wanted to like them, for their brilliantly realized settings, machete-sharp satire of American life, and deeply compelling narratives. The reason I'm so excited about GTA IV is that it looks to keep and amplify these awesome things while fixing the aforementioned nagging flaws. RE4-style aiming and Gears-esque cover? Yes please. Reasonable wanted system? I'll take it!

A major question which I had about the forthcoming release of Grand Theft Auto IV was "How will the Special Edition be packaged?". Today an employee of an Australian retail store has answered that question for me and the many others who were curious.

The game, soundtrack CD, art book, keyring and bag will all be stuffed very tightly inside the lock box, which itself will then be inside an outer cardboard box which features different artwork to the standard edition of the game. Check out all of the images in da link:
