GTA IV in the news

"GTA IV" released Tuesday, expected to gross $400 million in first week

"Iron Man" opens this weekend, expected to take in $50 to $60 million

Quotes:

"Today, I was as excited as I was when I was 5 years old and I just got my first Nintendo Entertainment System on Christmas Day."

D.J. Brotherson from Winnipeg, Canada, said he enjoyed the game so much, he wanted to skip work and keep playing all night, saying it was unlike any game he had ever played.

"The story line is very well-written," he said, adding that the game "plays like an interactive Martin Scorsese movie."

"GTA IV" is a "landscape-changing event that doesn't come around very often," Reiner said.

"I now know how film critics felt after screening 'The Godfather,' " his review began.

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of "GTA IV" publisher Rockstar Games, predicted that with 6 million preorders worldwide, the game will bring in more than $400 million. "GTA IV" has a chance of surpassing the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" as the highest-grossing entertainment title in its first week of sales, and that's across all genres.

This weekend won't be the first time analysts have speculated about video games damaging box office numbers. Last year, with $170 million in launch day sales and $300 million in its first week, "Halo 3" was blamed by some for the poor box office performance of "The Heartbreak Kid," starring Ben Stiller.

GTA IV may be most expensive game ever made

Since 1999, the title of most expensive game ever made has belonged to Shenmue, an action-adventure game for the Sega Dreamcast, which cost over $70 million to create. Now, according to Grand Theft Auto IV producer Leslie Benzies, Shenmue may have finally been topped.

Although he wasn't sure on the exact figures, Benzies told the Times Online that, over the three and a half years the game was in development, the 1000-plus people working on it probably cost Rockstar around $100 million. And, while Shenmue was only able to sell 1.2 million copies and came nowhere close to making a profit (or even breaking even) GTA IV is in a different situation. Predictions are that the game could possibly gross more than $400 million in the first week alone, making the $100 million price tag more then worth it.

It took almost ten years for a game to top Shenmue in terms of production costs but, given the rising costs of game development, GTA IV probably won't have such a long reign. I, for one, am curious to know how much it cost Hideo Kojima to make a game that barely fits on a Blu-Ray disc.

Just think, if EA had managed to buy out Take 2 (or did they? Gahh, I can't understand business speak!), we'de now be playing GTA IV on our PCs, DSs, Cells, Iphones, GBA, GB, Microwave ovens, Non digital watches, Commodores, PSPs, and maybe, just maybe the Ngage.

i'm scared to buy it now; i have a US NTSC PS3 and PAL GT5 is not working....video formatting error (NTSC SD 480p vs PAL 576p). I'll end up coughing up the 5gs and then not be able to play on my SD tv....any advise?

Wait for the official Indian stock to reach and buy it for 2.75G

its not the 5k which is a problem..its the thought of buying a PAL game and then seeing the Video Settings error; somebody else suggested i should get a HD tv to avoid this..debate debate debate!
