Just spoke to Sony repair center(unauthorised), they have said it could either be a problem with the mother board or a problem with the power supply, it will cost anywhere between 2500-6500.

I think thats too expensive. What do you guys think?

Well your ps3 turning off with the power shouldn't really be a problem, so long as you weren't doing a system update. My guess is that there was probably a voltage spike along with the power cut and that may have fried some components in the ps3. You should at least put a reliable surge protector if not a UPS. But my point is that a Rs. 2500 UPS would have saved you this hassle of a Rs. 2500 - 6500 repair.

As for the cost, have you talked to the Sony authorized repair centre? Perhaps they could also fix it in that price range, and that would be a whole lot more reliable. Otherwise, is sending it back to Singapore for official warranty repair an option?

3 days ago i decided to try out the ps3 one last time before i took it to the sony service center. The first time nothing happened. Still the same problem as last time.

Then i decided to remove the mirrors edge skin and try again. Getting it off was a pain in the a$$. once this was done it started working perfectly.

I have tested it extensively for the past few days and it all seems to be perfect. The culprit was the ME skin.

Thanks for all the help guys. No more skins for me.

My ps3 was on the xmb screen today and the electricity suddenly went off. So i switched off the main switch and waited for the electricity to come back.

once the elec was back i switched on the main power and the switch on the ps3. Suddenly it stopped responding. Only the red standby light shows.

I have tried the following:

Taken off the main power plug and reconnecting

switching the main power and swtich off and on multiple times

using the remote to swtich on the ps3

connecting the remote via usb to try to swtich it on

Please note that i do use a power surge protector but no UPS.

HAs this happened to anyone before? is there something i can try? getting really worried now.

Console is a NTSC singapore console 40gb black bought in nov 07.

Try holding eject button

 applying skins f**ked up your PS3 , I have ordered a Decal skin recently for my PS3 , so wanna confirm.Anyone else can justify this statement , a skin can actually harm the PS3 in any way.. :)

I myself am using a decalgirl skin on my ps3 and there are plenty of other users on GI itself who use decalgirl skins. None of us had any problems. no need to worry joy.

I was using a mirrors edge skin on the PS3. And yes i do confirm that the skin was the only problem.I just removed the skin from the ps3 and it started working fine.

Tried almost everything before that (except for opening the PS3) and it didnt work. once the skin was off it worked perfectly. The skin was not from decal girl, but the mirrors edge one.

hmmm..looks like the PS3 didn't like the game ...next time try a Killzone2 skin ;-) . But seriously I can't figure out how the skin can cause the problem unless it was touching some part of the PS3 internal components. Did you try putting it back and checking ? Maybe it was holding some sort of static charge or something which caused the prblm...far fetched I know but just thinking aloud.....

The power button is touch sensitive, which when under any skin finds difficult to sense touch. I face a similar problem with Decalgirl but is not so grave, I just press it little harder so that it can sense the touch and it works.
