Hi Folks,

I am planning to buy a PS3 from US and bring back to India. Good idea? Pro's Cons?

I have the PS3 sitting in my DELL shopping cart waiting to hit the purchase button as soon as I get some feedback from the gurus on this site.

Please help me - thanks so much.

Regards,

-Mav

My opinion:

Better to buy it from india.

1.You will need to import Blu-ray movies from US to play them. The ones from Indian won't work.(Different regions)

2.US consoles are NTSC while indian games are PAL.So if you have a SDTV then you are screwed.(You will need to buy a HDTV and connect the ps3 via HDMI for proper gaming then)

3.US warranty won't feature in India.

4.You will need a converter i.e from 110v AC to 220v AC(I'm not sure about this)

Just Hit it. Why?

1> Its region A console. Best for blu-rays.

2> Much cheaper compared to india.

Things to watch out for

1> Customs at the port of entry.

2> You should know* how and where to fix the SOD, just in case it happens after to come back here

Actually I did pull the trigger - happy to see such quick feedback.

I assume SOD = PS3 equivalent of RROD?

Didn't realize PS3 had this issue too. Anyways I travel frequently back and forth so no issues.

Thanks for the response - really appreciate it.

i bought my ps3 in the US from walmart.com. It works out a lot cheaper than here and as hp said the region A is best for Blu-rays

I did not experience any SOD tilll now and it's more than 6 months since i've bought my console. It's a rare issue.

btw, even if u get any such probelm, u can ask abt it in the forum and they'll help you out on where and how to fix it.

btw, what is the deal ur getting in dell.com ?

i would suggest u get ps3 from india, since u get warranty plus new stock is available here with resistance 2 and dual shock 3,there isnt huge price defference compare xbox 360 between india and us ,it should be 3-5k less in us ,plus 40 gb price has been reduced, get from gi vendors,u may get 1-2k cheaper, unless u want some blueray movies get it from us,

You are welcome. And congratulations on your new PS3.

SOD is not equivalent to RROD of PS3. Its not even close to RROD. While RROD is a widespread epidemic SOD is a rare case.

I have got my PS3 from UK and have been using it rigorously since last 1.5 years. No issues so far.

So you are saying I can get PS3 cheaper in India - I got it for $349 = Rs. 16752

On Sony India the PS3 (80 GB) is Rs. 25590

The difference is about Rs 9238 more in India - so sounds like you're an idiot who doesnt know what he is talking about - remind me to keep you off my threads and mark you as someone who talks crap with out knowing his a** from his face.

Sorry - hate people who try to mislead people with no idea of reality.

1> Indian blu-rays are region free hence they will work on US PS3. Importing blu-rays from US is much cheaper compared to buying from here. Atleast now.

2> It is not a general problem. Only happens with few games. The only one I have seen so far is GTA4.

3> True

4> No need for voltage conversion. PS3 power supply unit is world votage compatible. All you need is an indian cable.

Thanks so much - all very useful information.

As for Blu-Rays I keep getting mine dirt cheap here in the US - have over 100 now - will be bringing all back to India

Hope the customs guys let me through :-)

I am a arrogant SOB who will pay duty but no bribes - so I expect to shell out some at Mumbai - but honesty is the best policy :-)

Someone's got to do it and bring core values back to India which is seriously missing it in all walks of life.

No need for converter. I am using US PS3 in india from last 6 months . U may not even need an indian cable If u buy some surge protecter kind of thing which will have proper slot put the cable. Thats what i am dng rite now. :(
