Battlefield: Bad Company 2

it's hard to say what a server for this game will cost, considering that the only way you can get it is through ea approved affiliates. a friend of mine rents an l4d2 server and he pays 20£ for 3 months, but l4d2 has publicly available dedicated server files so it will be cheaper. plus, the rent usually depends on the number of player slots you take, with an average of maybe 1$ per slot? so a 32 man server would be close to 30$ per month. like i said though, it depends on whether there are affiliates around our location, what the options are etc.

That sounds pretty cheap actually. If you do go down that way and have enough people to play with I would spring for one slot.

Anyway seems like we have a SP reveal on our hands tomorrow. From the BFBC2 twitter -

RT @L_Twin: Cloudy morning in San Fran. Now to hit traffic to EA's main office for GT interviews & prep for tomorrow's singleplayer reveal.

Bad Company 2 - No Self Hosted Dedicated Servers

Just hours after finding out that Supreme Commander won’t allow custom maps more damming news comes for the PC modding community. Electronic Arts today announced that the PC version of Battlefield Bad Company 2 will not have any modding tools released. This in turn means custom maps will not be a choice.

Electronic Arts have also decided they will not distribute the dedicated server software to the general public. The battlefield blog states - “There are many factors for why we have decided this with the biggest factor being security & integrity of our game & Dedicated Servers." This means you won't be able to host your own server using your own server hardware, however you will still be able to rent one - unlike in the much publicized Call of Duty 6 system. The vast majority of dedicated servers are rented by the admins, rather than run.

This may be a mid-way between getting rid of dedicated servers, and having the complete server package that previously was shared. If EA pulls it off correctly you can expect the system to be used across a range of future games. As with a lot of recent moves eliminating dedicated servers the core reason EA does not want to give out the dedicated server software is piracy. All the previous games have had the software hacked to be able to allow pirated copies play on private servers. However the software has been made and will be distributed to server hosts, so I would place a bet on it leaking out.

DICE compromises Bad Company 2 dedicated server support

DICE explains BFBC2 server policy

DICE has told Eurogamer there is "no profit" made from forcing Battlefield: Bad Company 2 players to rent dedicated servers instead of building their own.

Producer Gordon Van Dyke said files the community needs to build dedicated servers are being withheld in order to "protect the game's integrity on PC".

"This does not earn DICE a profit," BFBC2 Van Dyke told us. "But we will see where the game goes and support it post launch."

Right now the only way to host a private dedicated server is by renting from one of DICE's authorised hosts. These, Van Dyke added, have already been picked in "all major regions of the world".

This is a first for the Battlefield series, as Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 both supported community members building and hosting their own dedicated servers.

DICE had made much of Battlefield: Bad Company 2's dedicated server support after Infinity Ward decided to go peer-to-peer with Modern Warfare 2 on PC.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 goes into PC beta testing later this month, starting 28th January and ending 25th February.

The full game's out on 5th March.
