Dead Space: Extraction

Well, the Wii's distinction in capabilities is quite known, and it doesn't claim to offer exactly what the other consoles are offering. The upcoming version of Ghostbusters for Wii is an example of that, since it's using cartoony characters instead of the more realistic facsimiles on the other console versions.

But I'd again point back to the broader problem of Lightgun game vs FPS. It's hard to make a game that can do both well, and I can't think of anyone who's done a really great job on that. It's just rather difficult for the average gamer to focus on steering their trajectory and aiming on the fly, and that can make the game less enjoyable as a result.

With Deadspace Extraction, you're getting a long playtime, and even though it's rails there's a chance for some fun replayability due to the game dynamics. For instance, the idea of being able to shoot off body parts of the different creepy crawly creatures in cool and crazy ways could make for some good laughs for you and your buddies, offering an extra twist on the horror genre.

With rails limiting your movement, you don't have to draw in every last bit of a scene, because there are parts that you won't be able to see from your viewpoint. This allows the graphics quality to be boosted by skimping in ways that ease the graphics burden.

Without blindly defending a particular game like Deadspace Extraction, I will say that I'm really glad that Nintendo has renewed the popularity of the lightgun game, which is a step above the FPS, in my opinion.

Can a good lightgun game be made that also gives the full freedom of movement of FPS? Well, Nintendo obviously put a joystick on the nunchuk for a reason, so maybe it will depend on how future developers make the fullest possible use of the Wii's control interface.

My ribbing of Extraction is down to the fact that its a rail shooting port (or remake) of a brilliant third person free moving shooter. To me that seems like a gimped cop out just to make money off the novelty factor of a gory, horror themed game for the supposedly family friendly Wii. Granted, other gorefests like RE4 and Mad World are terrific games, but one was a direct port of an extremely good TPS while the other was specifically developed ground up for the Wii. My concern stems from other obvious franchise milking products like RE:Umbrella Chronicles (I think thats the name of the RE themed rail shooter) which outright sucked. You can actually draw a parallel between that and the current case in point. Besides, the fact that the publisher in question here is the franchise ruining behemoth named EA, adds to the discomfort.

I can see where you're coming from, and yeah, ultimately it all boils down to what EA wants. But keep in mind that titles like Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, and Boom Blox were met with concerns on actually being remotely engaging (I doubt anyone anticipated how well Dead Space would've turned out, that's for sure). Anyway, if all this means we'll be getting another rail-shooter out of this and it actually turns out to be good, hey, I'm all for that.

Also, last I checked, RE: UC met with mostly decent reviews. I'm not sensing the outright suckage you so speak of, but to each and his own. I remember a couple of guys (I don't necessarily remember if you were one of them) praising Web of Shadows being a better game than it was percieved by the critics. To-may-toe, To-mah-toe and all the jazz. Smoochies woochies!

Yup. I really liked Web of Shadows. Surprisingly terrific game.

Which brings me back to my main point. It was a surprise that it was that good. The same with Wii ports. You'd expect them to be bad because most are. Which makes it a surprise when they actually turn out to be good. You know, like movie tie-ins.
