Yeah but that doesnt make then stolen or smuggled does it?

Lets say I go out of the country, buy an Ipod, come back and sell it to someone for small profit. Thats not smuggling. I paid for that electronic equipment and I can do as I want with it and that includes selling it on.

There are 3 problems with this.

1. Prices are higher in most of the countries then in India so selling it for profit is not very easy.

2. I dont think there are hundreds and thousands of normal ppl traveling internationally with big heavy consoles and selling then to all these stores in indian just to make couple of hundred rupees.

3. Most of these ppl u r talking about sell their ipods to friends or relatives and not to stores.

You would be surprised by the margins. I think (AFAIK) that importers work via known contacts to import stuff in batches of 5-10. The margins are usually of 2k or so on consoles and most are imported from Japan or US, where the costs are significantly lower than the host country.

And about point 3. I know a few people who travel outside for various purposes and on return buy some electronics which are sold to grey marketeers for small profits.

I am in US and the cost of Consoles and games is lot more here then in India but i know in Japan cost of xbox is less then Us coz of the lower demand for MS products.

ONe think i dont understand if someone have enough money to travel internationally then why would he take the hassle of buying and selling just to make couple of grand INR. you cant even buy dinner with that money.(sorry no disrespect to indian money)

They might be going for several reasons and it wouldn't hurt to earn a little on the side...

Yeah. I am not saying people travel to import. But if you get a chance and can make 5k or so on a couple of digi cameras, why not. No one wants to turn down money for (almost) nothing.

I was in EU in 2007 and while returning i got myself an X360 from there...(got a very very good deal back then) All i did was to declare the 360 in my customs card (i was traveling with stuff costing well less than the permitted limit so it wasent an issue )

@ GodSpeed: If the total amount of stuff u get to the country is <25k INR ; u dont need to worry about customs at all; as the govt allows for the same. BTW, if the stuff is used and not packed; it helps even more....

Yeah Dullu is right. I bought my PS2 and a DS from UK a long time ago when I was visiting my sis. No one even bothered to ask me at the Airport. Most of the officials were actually sleeping. :giggle:

And AFAIK prices in most other countries are actually significantly lower than India, incl US UK and Jap. Going by Amazon an arcade model still costs about 2k less (at the very least) in all of those countries than a core in India. Plus in places like UK you can also claim VAT back at the airport so technically you get 10% off the price you paid.

Grey markets exist because of scarcity. Go back 10 yrs, most electronics weren't officially imported and / or marketed. We had to depend on people who made this their business. As more and more products started coming via official imports, the grey market has suffered. Why does it still continue? To leverage the price difference in various markets.

As for warranty, since imported products (official or otherwise) are made by the same manufacturer, there is no reason why the company shouldn't extend it. The only reason they don't is that they want to discourage the grey market and skim monies from people by building in the fear of warranty!
