@ GodSpeed: If the total amount of stuff u get to the country is <25k INR ; u dont need to worry about customs at all; as the govt allows for the same. BTW, if the stuff is used and not packed; it helps even more....

well i have a 60 gb 360 worth 230 pounds, a Rc tank worth 50 pounds and will buy a rc helicopter worth 150 pounds by the time i come to india.

Only the 360 can be stuffed in to the packing other items are a bit delicate and also huge, so they will have to be carried in seprately.

i dont have any experience with the Customs in India, but i did manage to clear out 2-3 consignments coz my good friends dad was in airports custom department, but now he has shifted to Ports.

and after resigning from parliamentry post i wont even get the "royal" treatment....... any 1 can clear out the air for me, i mean should i try to bring these goods declared or undeclared in mumbai?

Dont declare anything. Worked fine for me that way.

Edit Like I said I brought over a PS2 (which was then priced at 150pounds), a ninty DS (at 120 pounds) and some duty free alcohol and cigrattes. No one even asked me anything.

Also make sure you claim some VAT back at the airport.

i am coming in the month of may and i will be happy enough to get out of the airport without paying any "chai-pani" forget of abt reclaiming VAT.

btw how does tht work, "reclaiming VAT thing".

and did u bring those products inside u r baggage or in a seprate packing box?

My PS2 and DS were both in my carry on luggage. As was the whiskey which bought at the airport. I only had two bags (always travel light) and didnt check either one in.

And yeah like MT says bring your proof of purchase VAT bill to the airport. There is a special counter they have for that.

Carry your bills into the airport and you will be refunded the VAT that you have paid on your purchases.

Thank heavens, i have still saved the bill for the 360 now will go find the bill for RC tank, thks a ton guys.......

@aft: another noob q, i will carry only the 360 in the check in luggage , i intend to carry the Rc tank and the Rc heli in a separate large carry bag, r u sure i wont have to pay any bribe to bring tht in?

btw does any 1 have any idea of exact idea abt the value products tht u can bring into the country, legally?

Grey markets exist because of scarcity. Go back 10 yrs, most electronics weren't officially imported and / or marketed. We had to depend on people who made this their business. As more and more products started coming via official imports, the grey market has suffered. Why does it still continue? To leverage the price difference in various markets.

As for warranty, since imported products (official or otherwise) are made by the same manufacturer, there is no reason why the company shouldn't extend it. The only reason they don't is that they want to discourage the grey market and skim monies from people by building in the fear of warranty!
