Sony Confirms DualShock Controller For PlayStation 3

At his Tokyo Game Show keynote, Sony's Kaz Hirai has confirmed the DualShock 3 controller for the PlayStation 3, available in Japan in November as a separately sold accessory and in North American and European in Spring 2008.

Gamasutra was on the scene in Tokyo to hear Hirai's announcement on this topic, and his keynote commented with regard to this development: "In the PS3 we have the SIXAXIS sensor... however the users had requested that we resurrect the vibration function to this sensor. At the beginning we thought this would be difficult technologically... however we have been able to overcome this difficulty so today we are proud to announce the DualShock 3 controller."

According to Hari, there are ten DualShock 3 titles present and playable at Tokyo Game Show: Imabiki, G1 Jockey, Dynasty Warriors 6, Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Echochrome, Toy Home and Metal Gear Online.

Hirai continued: "As soon as the vibration function was added to our platform we had announced this to our partners, however there was very little time before TGS to give them a chance to add this function to their games."

He also added: "As for existing titles, through the network you can enjoy updating so you can truly enjoy the vibration features."

Unless you've been living under a rock on Mars, you've already heard about the Dual Shock 3, recently confirmed during Sony's keynote address at the Tokyo Game Show. And when it was unveiled, most noted a couple things; one of which was an important question: 1. it doesn't seem to change the cosmetic appearance of the Sixaxis, and 2. is the new rumble functionality any different than what we had in the Dual Shock 2?

Well, it appears the answer to that remains a bit up in the air, but the consensus seems to be that the rumble feature in DS3 does indeed feature new technology. Initially, one Sony source said the Dual Shock 3 will be identical to the Dual Shock 2- According to the Advanced Media Network, Sony's Kimberly Otzman said the rumble "will be exactly the same in both controllers with no difference in technology." This doesn't appear to be the case, though, as several sources, including 1Up, have put their hands on the new controller and found the rumble actually comes from different spots. They were playing MGS4 with it, for example, and when getting shot at from a certain direction, the controller would...well, rumble in that general direction. That'd be like our own little personal radar!

But the final aspect of concern is logical- what impact will this have on the battery life of the wireless controller? We needn't worry about that, though, as Otzman said the rumble won't have any "great strain" on the battery life. Sony expects the controller to last up to 15 hours with rumble enabled, although you'll still be able to get 30 hours out of it without the feature enabled. If you're wondering, the Xbox 360 controller last about 10 hours with the rumble on.

"The battery life depends on how often the rumble feature is used," said Otzman. " When the rumble feature is completely turned off, its equivalent with the Sixaxis and when the rumble feature is active it's about 15 hours, under SCE standard testing conditions."

Okay, sounds good to us. We wouldn't mind some official clarification on that "localized rumbling," but beyond that, it all sounds pretty good. Bring it on!

DualShock 3 More Advanced Than DualShock 2, Claims Metal Gear Solid 4 Developer

Contrary to official reports from Sony, Kojima Productions' Ryan Payton has gone on the record to state that the rumble in the DualShock 3 is more advanced than its DualShock 2 counterpart.

While discussing the rumble in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3) on the studio's podcast, guest John Ricciardi brought up the game's use of positional rumble--a feature not found in the DualShock 2.

"Is it safe to definitively say that the rumble in the DualShock 3 is better than the rumble in DualShock 2?" Ricciardi asked.

"Absolutely, yeah," responded Payton. "I mean, it feels better."

Payton went on to reveal that Kojima Productions and several other developers, including Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 team, had only received the tools to implement rumble a week before the Tokyo Game Show. The last minute rush to integrate new functionality calls to mind similar reports regarding the unveiling of Sixaxis motion control at Sony's E3 2006 press briefing.
