The Simpsons Game

Developed by: Electronic Arts

Published by: Electronic Arts

Genre: Action

Release Date: TBA

Available on: PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS

The Simpsons are coming, the Simpsons are coming! Specifically, to the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 2, the Wii, the DS, and the PlayStation Portable this fall. Electronic Arts has announced the ambitious new action game based on the long-running Fox comedy, which will be the publisher's first since it acquired the license.

It's not the first Simpsons game, by any stretch. Numerous titles have been based on the franchise, starting with The Simpsons: Bart Vs. the Space Mutants, and also including The Simpsons Hit and Run, Krusty's Super Fun House, and The Simpsons Road Rage.

In the latest game, which currently has the working title of The Simpsons (that title was used for an arcade game back in 1991), there will be 16 levels, which take the form of episodes, each with a unique title animation, setting, and story. Within each "episode" players will take control of two family members or play one of them with a friend in a split-screen two-player mode.

Early on, the dysfunctional Simpsons family--that is Bart, Homer, Marge, Lisa, and Maggie--realise that they are trapped in a video game and decide that they might as well use the opportunity to give themselves special powers. For instance, Bart can become Bartman, and Homer can transform into the Homerball. According to EA, the game makes fun of the video game industry, along with pop culture.

The Simpsons, was created by comic book writer Matt Groening, with its first episode broadcast in 1989. Since then, the show has run for 18 seasons, and a film, The Simpsons Movie, is due for release worldwide on July 27.

Simpsons Abandons 'Grand Theft Scratchy'

From 1up

The Simpsons Game from Electronic Arts hasn't been shy about poking fun at fellow game conventions, and a while ago we reported that Rockstar had its feathers ruffled by the parody. Lead designer Greg Rizzer commented that "if we make fun of Grand Theft Auto, we're not going to hurt the sales of Grand Theft Auto... But yeah, we've definitely had some reactions -- we've had to pull stuff from the game."

That's a spot-on description, as we found this weekend that the trailer previously devoted to the "Grand Theft Scratchy" parody has now been retitled to the infinitely less clever "Mob Rules," confirming that Grand Theft Auto was one of the casualties caused by lack of a sense of humor. Otherwise, the trailer looks untouched, so it seems that the title was the major problem and not the parody game content itself.

Rockstar does have a point -- it's not as if they've ever used an existing work as inspiration for satire. Oh wait...

As Sam reported earlier, Rockstar was pissed and it looks like now, they managed to get their way.

Making fun of GTA is equivalent to pissing its millions of fans across the globe :P !

I still remember when 'true crime' made fun of tommy vercetti (or his inability to swim), resulted in a heavy backlash by GTA fans....

moral of the story: dont touch GTA or even come close to making fun of it :)!

EA: "Content for Grand Theft Scratchy Has Not Been Removed"

From Kotaku

http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/ea-content-fo...oved-317789.php

Like a child's game of "Telephone" gone horribly wrong, it seems that the whole Rockstar vs. The Simpsons Game controversy has been blown way out of proportion. Around the time of Leipzig, rumors started flying around the blogosphere that complaints Rockstar made about the game had been the impetus for some posters promoting the "Grand Theft Scratchy" level of the Simpsons Game being removed from the show. As the weeks went by, the rumors grew to titanic proportions with stories of actual content being removed from the game and a level name change. All of this resulted in quite a bit of speculative Rockstar bashing not only from the press, but from some of the games' writers as well. But, as we've now discovered, it was mostly unfounded.

In a comment to Kotaku on the subject, EA rep Tammy Schachter had this to say.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to put these rumors to rest. There was absolutely no content removed from the game as a result of complaints or comments by another publisher.

The spoof content and parody storyline for The Simpsons Game has been in place since the early stages of the titles' development. In-game spoof content for Grand Theft Scratchy has not been removed.

Rockstar has remained typically tight-lipped on the whole situation but given all the trouble they've been having lately with certain Florida lawyers and the overblown hub-bub over Manhunt 2, who can blame them. The reasons for the removal of the posters from Leipzig is still a bit of a mystery, but who knows what goes on behind the mysterious walls of EA? In any case it seems that quite a few outlets and individuals owe a certain Rockstar Games a little apology. Strike that, a big apology.

R* makes fun of all their competitors....remember true crime, driv3r etc ?

dont know why they r giving so much importance to this ? maybe they are afraid, it might actually influence some parents to change their minds in allowing their children to play GTA 4 or it might attract unnecessary attention from troublemakers!

anyway, i think GTA was made fun of even in 'the simpsons movie'. Remember grand theft auto:walrus ?

Played some of it last night. Fun game! More fun if you are a big fan of the show.

To me the game feels a lot like Ultimate Spiderman set in the Simpsons' Universe. The entire town of Springfield is open to explore complete with all the Landmarks from the show. There's also tons of items to collect and "video game cliches" to discover in all the game's areas. The missions come in the form of episodes and you can start an episode by going to a designated spot in Springfield. After that the game becomes a linear affair. You basically need to do some platforming/fighting, puzzle solving and occassionaly defeat a boss to finish the episode. The missions are designed with co-op play in mind, so playing it co-op makes them a lot more fun and less frustrating because you do don't have to keep switching characters.

You can select two characters (from Homer, Bart, Lisa and Marge) at a time and cycle between them as per the objectives. Each character has unique abilities (Homer can unleash a devastating burp, Bart can use his slingshot and so on...). The script as usual is very funny, it's actually even funnier than the Simpsons movie. Talking to random people in Springfield also brings up some hilarious dialog. All the characters are voiced by the people from the show, so it feels a lot like watching the show rather than playing a game based on it.

There are about 18 story missions (judging from the achievement list) and lots of items of collect for each character. There's also a time attack mode where you can replay completed missions and try to beat a target time. That's a sizable amount of content I'd say.

The game is not perfect however. The platforming is somewhat frustrating mainly due to the camera which keeps getting in the way. Also it switches to a fixed camera angle at times which is somewhat annoying. Still the difficulty is kind of low so it's not all that bad. Besides there's always something funny going on in the background so you're always entertained.

I wouldn't say this is a "must get" title, but if you're a Simpsons fan and if you're looking for a fun casual game to play and laugh at then this is as good as it gets!
