Playing this on vita, I'm very glad we got this in PS plus. Everyone who got this on psplus should try this game.

Basically you have 2 protagonists to choose and start. Both of them have different stories. Momohime, a princess who is possesed by spirit of swordsman jinkuro izuna. Kisuke, a ninja who lost his memories. Completed momohime story and just started kisuke story.

Gameplay is simple and fun. You can carry 3 swords at a time. There are 108 swords in total. Each sword is classified as either long blade or blade. Long blades have slow swings but does more damage and short blades have faster swings. [square] button for normal attack with sword, you can perform combos mashing square button. By combining with left analog stick and jump button(x) you can perform plunging attacks, upper cuts, dashes, can do combos in air etc. Each sword has a special attack(circle button), can only use special attacks for limited times as spirit gauge of sword exhaust if you use them. The sword will break if the gauge exhausts completely and it can be recovered by sheathing it, you change to another sword by sheathing the present one. Triangle button is for changing swords, if you change swords while the sword icon on top of screen is flashing you can perform a powerful unsheathing attack that will damage all enemies on the screen. Only left anolog stick and 4 buttons are the controls used in the game. Yet the game is very challenging, all the bosses need different tactics to defeat, even the normal enemies can prove to be challenging at times.

You will get swords by defeating bosses or by forging. There is a sword tree which unlocks swords for forgeing them as you defet bosses.

You level up by gaining xp from killing enemies, but the chaos mode(hard mode) I played will automatically increases HP and increases vitality and strength stat. You won't be able to customize. I'm not sure of legend mode which is like normal mode. But it should also be the same. This is 1 thing that might dissapoint who are expecting more RPG experience. But the variety of swords and their special attacks will more than make up for this shortcoming.

There are 8 acts for each character with a boss at the end of each act. Each act takes place in different location on the Japan map. The map is made very cleverly, you almost feel like you are navigating in a 3D map like in skyrim or rdr. Momohime will travel from west to east in the map and kisuke travels in opposite direction.

I thought its going to be a generic samurai collecting swords story but the story is also surprisingly great. There are lots of interesting fantasy elements in the game inspired from japanese folklore and shinto myths. There are many NPCs in the world who will tell some interesting sh*t. Much like dark souls style of storytelling. There are also multiple endings to story which can be unlicked after completing both characters stories and unlocking 108 swords.

The background art and music are the best part if the game. The 2D background art is not static, its dynamic like trees move in the background and sometimes it rains. The perspective view of background also changes when you jump. It almost feels like a dynamic 3D world. Will post some screenshots later.

Overall the challenging and rewarding gameplay, interesting storytelling feels much like dark souls, my main reason to like the game. The background art, music and badass protagonists makes it even better.

PS. This game brings back glorious NES childhood memories back. BTW this game really is inspired from legend of the kage NES game. While I was initially playing the game I first thought it feels like that game but damn it was really inspired from that game.

Playing as kisuke is nice. His swords special attacks are very powerful compared to jinkuro swords which is making the game pretty easy.

is fighting the final boss with all swords unlocked rewarding?? i found the boss combat on chaos a bit too difficult and too button spammy on legend.. felt the combat and traversal and backtracking a bit of a chore(mainly played on legend).. the art and music is however awesome.

Yeah, I'm playing this now. Started with Momohime's (the girl) story. Playing on Legend as it's the first time I'm playing a game like this. The combat is fun to an extent, but it does seem I'm only mashing buttons. But the artwork is mind blowing, especially on DAT OLED! :good:

There is an item called bronze mirror, it will teleport you back to the last shrine you saved game. Look the map for your next destination, if its near the last shrine you saved the game teleport there if not push forward from save point near boss battle. Your next destination is usually near either of the save locations, so not much backtracking is needed.

I completed game once on chaos but didnt unlock different endings. Will play again sometime. I think the 2nd ending boss will be the other character and for 3rd ending you get the same boss as you played first time. Boss battles on chaos were pretty difficult, epically momohime bosses. I had hard times with almost all bosses in momohime story, in kisuke story most of bosses are normal, except last 3 bosses.

Its more like HnS game than RPG, not sure why this game is called RPG. Lots of button mashing is also needed.

Story is very nice :D

Yeah forging helps a lot. I didn't realize until I complete momohime story.

Keep eating at all the inns you come across. That will increase spirit points. Don't worry about money. You won't need it at all.

For forging you need both spirit and souls. Souls you can easily get by killing enemies but can get spirit only through eating.
